Recipe: Mar-gore-ita

Ingredients
  • For margarita
  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila
  • 1/2 ounce triple sec
  • 2 ounces sweet and sour mix
  • For lime eyeball garnish
  • Lime wheel
  • Red maraschino cherry
  • Mini chocolate chip
  • Red caramel
  • 1-inch long piece of green plastic straw
  • For red caramel blood drips
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1/4 teaspoon red food coloring
Preparation

For red caramel blood drips: Prepare red caramel blood drips on glasses the day before the party. To make the red caramel drips, combine ingredients in a small saucepan and stir until sugar is moistened. Heat saucepan over medium-high heat until mixture reaches soft ball stage about 4 to 6 minutes. Remove from heat and cool completely. Place margarita glasses on wax paper. Use the back of a spoon to scrape red caramel on the outside glass rims creating the blood drips. Allow caramel to set up overnight. Clean drips off bottom or base of glasses if necessary where caramel has dripped down.

For lime eyeball garnish: The day before the party, cut maraschino cherries in half. Use a dab of red caramel on back of mini chocolate chips and stick them in center of cherries to resemble a pupil. Dip ends of 1-inch straws in red caramel and insert into the open cut side of each maraschino cherry half. (The cherry will look like a little umbrella with the straw as a handle. This will help keep the cherry in place on the lime as wet cherries do not stick to wet limes very well!) Set cherries on a piece of wax paper, and allow caramel to set up overnight.

An hour before the party, cut a slit into the lime wheel and slip the straw with cherry on it into the slit and up to the center of the lime wheel as the iris of the eyeball. Slip the garnishes on the rims of the glasses. Place prepared red caramel blood dripped glasses with lime eyeball garnishes on the bar for guests to use for Mar-gore-itas!

For margarita: Combine ingredients over ice in prepared red caramel blood dripped margarita glass with lime eye-ball garnish.

  • 1/2 ounce coffee
  • 2 ounces Half and Half (tinted orange with food coloring)
  • 1 1/2 ounces Grand Marnier or orange-flavored liqueur

Recipe: Pumpkin mojito with easy Halloween favor garnishes

Ingredients
  • For pumpkin syrup
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree (canned)
  • For mojito
  • 6 - 8 mint leaves
  • 1 1/2 ounces light rum
  • Splash of lime juice (about 1/2 teaspoon)
  • 3 ounces pumpkin syrup
  • Club soda
Preparation

Prepare pumpkin syrup first: Stir together sugar, water, and pumpkin puree in a medium saucepan, and cook over high heat until puree has dissolved and mixture just boils; about 3 to 5 minutes. Cool completely and refrigerate until ready to serve. Pumpkin syrup can be made the day before it will be used.

To make the pumpkin mojito: Add juice, mint, and rum into a tall glass. Crush mint using the back of a spoon or a muddler until liquid is light green, then pour in pumpkin syrup. Add ice cubes to fill half of the glass. Add club soda to where glass is 3/4 full and stir. For an easy Halloween accent, slip a rubber wristband with a word like “freaky” or “spooky” around glass.

Recipe: Pirate potion individual bottles with personalized bottle corsets

Ingredients
  • For paper corset
  • Heavy-weight designer scrapbook paper or cardstock
  • Black cord
  • For pirate poton
  • 1 bottle Cabernet Sauvignon (750 mililiters)
  • 1 liter Sprite
  • Juice of 5 Navel oranges
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Preparation

For pirate bottle and paper corset: Remove the labels from clear glass bottles. (I used 12 ounce beer bottles.) Use hot soapy water to rub off the remaining adhesive. Wash bottles in the dishwasher to clean them inside and out.

Choose heavy-weight designer scrapbook paper or cardstock for the bottle corsets. For each bottle, cut the paper into a rectangle to fit around the bottle; 8 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches. Punch a few holes along the 3 1/2-inch edges of the rectangle and wrap it around the bottle. Use black cord to lace up the corset at the back of the bottle.

For pirate potion: Combine ingredients in a large container. Use a funnel to pour into 12 ounce bottles; insert corks. Then, slide corsets on bottles.
