Cate Edwards, daughter of former presidential candidate John Edwards and the late Elizabeth Edwards, married Trevor Upham on Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday, People.com reported.

The couple were college sweethearts at Princeton University. Cate Edwards, 29, is a lawyer. Upham, 30, is a surgical fellow at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington.

The wedding was at United Methodist Church. People.com said the reception was held at the Edwards home, with a rock-and-roll dance band hired by Upham, who used to book party bands when he was in college.

Cate Edwards' family has been torn by scandal and tragedy. Her late mother, Elizabeth, died in December of breast cancer at age 61, less than two weeks after the couple became engaged.

“I feel so lucky to have shared that joy with her, to have had the time to leaf through bridal magazines together and talk about the wedding,” Ms. Edwards wrote in an article for the November issue of Glamour magazine. “I feel blessed because, in her last weeks, she told me she was comforted to know I’d set forth on my own life path, with someone she loved and respected, and with whom she truly believed I would be happy.”

By then, Elizabeth Edwards had been separated from John Edwards, a former Democratic senator from North Carolina, who had an affair during the campaign that produced a daughter. He faces federal criminal charges of violating campaign finance laws in a trial set for January.

Cate Edwards and Trevor Upham broke up for two years before getting together for good in 2006, The New York Times said in a report about the wedding.

“We wanted to see what else was out there, and nothing else was — nothing else as good as what we have,” Ms. Edwards told Harper’s Bazaar in 2007. “It’s really nice to have someone who was there before all this began. You can really trust they’re there for the right reasons.”
