ANN CURRY, co-host:
Back now at 8:09 with
Hollywood
's
wedding
of the year.
Reality
star
Kim Kardashian
and
NBA
player
Kris Humphries
tied the knot over the weekend. And as we've mentioned,
Kathie Lee Gifford
was there. We'll talk to her in just a moment about all of that. But first, here's
NBC
's
Aditi Roy
.
ADITI ROY reporting:
Reality television met fantasy, as
Kim Kardashian
floated down the aisle to wed
Kris Humphries
, in
Hollywood
's grandest
wedding
of the year.
Ms. NATALIE THOMAS (News Editor, US Weekly):
This was the mother of all weddings. This was a huge celebrity affair. It was a really who's who of
Hollywood
.
ROY:
E!
Entertainment
, which is owned by
NBC
's parent company
Comcast
, had cameras rolling at the
wedding
as part of an upcoming special. Among the celebrities attending the $10 million
black and white
affair,
Eva Longoria
,
Lindsay Lohan
,
Ryan Seacrest
,
Avril Lavigne
,
Kathie Lee Gifford
and
Vera Wang
, who designed three dresses for the bride. The one
Kim
wore for the ceremony was an ivory gown with full tulle skirt, basque waist, and
Chantilly lace
applique on the bodice and train, capped off with a veil that was literally dripping with diamonds.
Stepfather Bruce Jenner
escorted her down the aisle to
Kris
, who was wearing a classic tuxedo.
Kim
's bridesmaids matched the bride in
Vera Wang
ivory gowns. It was a made for
TV
event. But there were some unrehearsed moments.
Ms. THOMAS:
Kourtney
and
Scott's
20-month-old son, Mason, was the
ring bearer
. It took him three times, but he finally got up the aisle with the rings and everyone was laughing.
ROY:
The
fairy tale
setting: a private mansion in
Montecito
,
California
.
The inspiration:
I, Katherine Elizabeth...
Princess KATHERINE:
...that other big
wedding
this year.
ROY:
Well,
Kim
was referring to it as her own
royal wedding
. She was very taken by
William
and
Kate
's
wedding
and she wanted it to be very similar. It was very regal, it was all
black and white
, very classy, very elegant and of course, over the top.
Ms. THOMAS:
There is
little
of the
Kardashian
's life that's not documented by cameras. Whether at play, at work, and especially in love.
Kim
and
Kris
started dating eight months ago.
ROY:
She's kind of met her match. She's a strong, controlling businesswoman and he doesn't take it lying down.
Ms. THOMAS:
Their
TV
schedule prevents them from going on a honeymoon. But with the opulence of this glorious night, it seems the
Kardashians
may be living in a post-
wedding
dream for a while before coming back to reality. For TODAY, Aditi Roy,
NBC
News,
Los Angeles
.
ROY:
So,
Kathie Lee Gifford
was a guest at the
wedding
along with
Ken Baker
, who is E!'s chief news correspondent. Good morning to both of you.
CURRY:
Morning,
Ann
.
KATHIE LEE GIFFORD reporting:
Good morning.
Mr. KEN BAKER:
OK, so let me...
CURRY:
Ken
was not my date. I want you all to know that.
GIFFORD:
I wish.
Mr. BAKER:
You are a married woman and I'm glad
Frank
is hearing about that this morning.
CURRY:
Yes.
GIFFORD:
But let me just say this, what was the best -- let me ask each of you, what was your best moment there?
What would you say
? First,
Kathie Lee
.
CURRY:
For me, it was definitely
little
Mason coming down the aisle. He stole -- if it's possible to steal the thunder from
Kim Kardashian Humphries
, it was Mason. He was just the cutest thing, and it just reminded me of the study in contrast for me with this
wedding
. It was typically
Kardashian
, over the top, crazy. But ultimately it comes down to a family. And everybody's got their -- that
little
-- that
little
one that comes down the aisle, their flower girls or something and it just made it so human. It really did. What did you think,
Ken
?
GIFFORD:
Well, besides all the free champagne, which was really a great part, I think
Kim
's dress, and she looked so beautiful and she really took a risk, I mean, by not going with a traditional tiara. She had this very elegant headpiece...
Mr. BAKER:
Yes.
GIFFORD:
...that people are calling, sort of like an Indian princess piece.
Mr. BAKER:
Yes.
GIFFORD:
I don't know, she really was daring with it. I thought everyone gasped when they saw her.
Mr. BAKER:
Yes.
GIFFORD:
In fact, they went into applause when she walked down the aisle.
Mr. BAKER:
Yeah.
GIFFORD:
And that was because she really did look stunning.
Mr. BAKER:
And you mentioned the dress,
Ken
, but she actually wore three dresses, I understand. So, are you saying the
wedding dress
is the one she looked the most beautiful in,
Kathie Lee
?
CURRY:
How could
Kim
not look gorgeous in everything she wears. No, I love the way she mixed up her looks. I mean, the only thing that I kept thinking about is, 'My gosh, when is she going to attend her own
wedding
?' She's backstage getting a new dress on, a new hair done. But it made it like a
fashion show
, in a sense. It was a
wedding
slash
fashion show
.
GIFFORD:
Well, actually, I spoke to her stylist who was at the
wedding
and she said that the second dress that
Kim
wore, actually the stylist wanted that to be the actual
wedding dress
.
Mr. BAKER:
Yeah.
GIFFORD:
So they compromised and said, 'Well, OK, she'll wear it as the second dress.' So she got to wear at least two dresses because it was a really difficult decision for her.
Mr. BAKER:
As for that 20.5-carat ring she had on her finger, I'm trying to figure out whether that's the size of a dime or a nickel. Did you guys get a good look at it?
CURRY:
It's the size of an ice cube, it's what it is. Yeah. She had -- she was wearing it of course, on her right hand until the
wedding ring
had -- could be put on. But did you notice that she said she'd never see the ring? As they were putting it on her finger, she said, 'Oh, I haven't seen it yet.'
GIFFORD:
Yeah, yeah. I mean, they were beautiful bands. But of course, the
engagement ring
kind of eclipses things. Whenever you're going to wear, you know, a 20-carat ring, it's going to eclipse any
wedding band
that's put on someone's finger.
Mr. BAKER:
Meantime...
CURRY:
That's why I rarely wear mine.
GIFFORD:
Oh. Meantime, as for what the guests were wearing, I understand that everybody had to be wearing
black and white
.
CURRY:
Yes.
GIFFORD:
So
do you want to
--
and I
know
Kathie Lee
, that means that you had to put a lot of thought into that. But besides
Kathie Lee
,
Ken
, who looked fabulous at the
wedding
?
CURRY:
Well, I think that obviously
Kris Humphries
looked really, really, just dapper.
Mr. BAKER:
Yeah. He changed again -- he changed also.
GIFFORD:
Yeah. I think
Kim
's already sort of affecting him. He went into two outfits throughout the night, which you usually don't see from a groom. But he did. But I think that, you know, really everyone looked actually stunning. And that's what
Kim
wanted. She had a vision of
black and white
. And everyone did adhere to it.
And I
have to say that what really was interesting was the bridesmaids. Her sisters, they looked really beautiful...
Mr. BAKER:
Mm
-hmm.
GIFFORD:
...sort of a
Pippa Middleton
effect where
Kim
wasn't afraid to have the bridesmaids maybe even possibly overshadow her -- they didn't overshadow her, but they looked beautiful, very tight-fitting ivory gowns and they looked gorgeous too. Basically, everyone who was in that ceremony, in that courtyard, right down to the
little
ring bearer
...
Mr. BAKER:
Oh, please! He was so cute.
GIFFORD:
He's so cute. That's her nephew, Mason. He was really -- I think he really did steal the show.
Mr. BAKER:
He totally stole it. I mean, everybody -- everybody was a
little
nervous, and nobody really knows what's going to happen. And then that human moment and it just did -- it set the pace then for a
little
bit of humor during the actual ceremony as well. You know,
Ann
, what struck me, we expect the glamour and everything from the
Kardashians
, but the ceremony itself was one of the most spiritual I have ever been to. The pastor is
Kris Humphries
' family pastor. They're very devout born-again family, and he talked about all the words in the
Bible
for love. We only have in English one word for love. But in the
Bible
there are many between the Greek and the
Hebrew
. And it really made you think about what love really, really is. And there's such a big difference between love and lust. And he preached the gospel, I thought. He was wild.
GIFFORD:
Yeah. He also was very realistic. He said, 'Look guys, if you don't work at it, you could have a very mediocre marriage very quickly.'
Mr. BAKER:
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
GIFFORD:
And everyone was like, 'Wow, I can't believe he said that.' So it was very
fairy tale
-esque, but it was also a real dose of reality, which is appropriate enough since reality cameras were shooting.
Mr. BAKER:
Yeah. It was very -- he was very grounded about, you know, 'This may be good for now.' But you're right, it's a real commitment of your time and your -- work to make a marriage work.
GIFFORD:
Well, you know, given that we're almost out of time, I'm going to have to ask you to make a hard turn here and tell us about the swag that you got.
CURRY:
Well, this -- he didn't get because he didn't go to the party the night before the
wedding
for the really important friends and family.
GIFFORD:
It's true.
Mr. BAKER:
And he's been dying to get my flip flop, which says, "
Kim
loves
Kris
," and is sort of like the ring, except her ring is 10 times bigger.
GIFFORD:
But I did get a cookie.
Mr. BAKER:
He got a cookie that's already broken. But I guess, at the end of the
wedding
there was a big swag bag, too, huh? Did I leave too early?
GIFFORD:
Yeah, they had scented candles, they have also a -- they gifted everyone a pair of shoes, redeemable with a gift certificate of course. We didn't walk out with
Jimmy Choos
. But, you know, there was plenty of gifts for everyone to go around.
Mr. BAKER:
All right. Well, it sounds like you two had a good time and
it was a good day
for all.
CURRY:
It was beautiful.
GIFFORD:
All right,
thank you so much
for joining us this morning. Thanks for getting up early,
Kathie Lee
.
CURRY:
Thank you,
Ann.
You bet. Love you.
GIFFORD:
