and
hoda kotb
. live from
studio 1a
in
rockefeller plaza
.
>>>
hello, everybody, guess what, it's thirst-day thursday,
august 18th
and we're so happy you're with us today, aren't we, hoda?
>>
we certainly are.
>>
and we're glad we're not on a plane with
gerard depardieau
.
>>
they tell you you cannot leave your seat to go to the
rest room
because of turbulence or they're taking off or whatever reason.
>>
they want to reach a certain altitude.
>>
he was sitting in his seat and his plane was delayed another
20 minutes
and he can't wait. what do you do when you can't wait.
>>
we'll tell you what he did.
>>
yes. we will.
>>
what did he do, hoda?
>>
he whipped it out and did right there. in the seat. he had a bottle.
>>
he went in the bottle, okay? and i guess in front of people, he had to.
>>
apparently he did it as privately as possible.
>>
how is that possible?
>>
but unfortunately, he missed. and there was a little accident and he -- offered to clean it up, nicely. but they said, we don't want you getting out of your seat.
>>
but you know what, we've all been there, and i don't know if his circumstances, if he had to go desperately, you know. you've been in that situation and you're sitting there and you're dying, and they're telling you that you can't get up. but they're up, they're walking around.
>>
they are trained for any emergency.
>>
but here's your option, there are no choices. sometimes you have to go.
>>
i know that. and, apparently he was thrown off the plane and the plane was delayed two more hours. i will confess --
>>
i can't believe you're going to confess.
>>
one time i was in norway doing a big
guinness book of world records
special with
david frost
, right? we were in a little teeny, one-engine plane with one pilot. five hours to get somewhere. five hours and no bathroom.
>>
what did you do?
>>
well, there was though turbulence outside the plane. but in me, you get to that point where -- you're busting.
>>
what did you do?
>>
i had to excuse myself and go to the rear of the plane and hide myself.
>>
where did you --
>>
you don't want to wet yourself, hoda, it was unseemly.
>>
i don't remember. i didn't even remember about the incident until i was reading about this and i went, oh, i do know how that feels. but you don't do it in front of people. you find a quiet place.
>>
if you're a new york cabbie, they sometimes have a bottle in the car.
>>
that happens. that happens.
>>
where are they going to go?
>>
there are no
rest rooms
in new york.
>>
the public ones.
>>
but what about when you're in the car with your kids and you're on a long car ride and they have to go. what do you do, do you pull over?
>>
are you asking me this because i have kids and you don't and --
>>
what do you do with your children?
>>
once again there have been occasions when you wanted to just -- take care of business and not hurt anybody. so --
>>
in the car?
>>
yeah. not cass, but other people.
>>
the other one.
>>
all right. here's another -- interesting airline story. so
qantas airlines
is now showing something that kind of looks like a
porn movie
on their planes.
>>
it doesn't kind of look like, it is.
>>
there are naked scenes, there are women kissing each other. there are orgasms.
>>
what do you call porn?
>>
i don't know. but anyway, they're saying that kids 15 and younger shouldn't look at the screen.
>>
15 and younger? how are you going to avert their eyes when they finally get to turn the
little light
off and go to the
rest room
and urinate properly? i think kids are subjected to so much garbage in this world. i think they should stop it right now and you shouldn't fly qantas --
>>
what?
>>
i'm sorry. that's what i would do. if i know that that's the truth and i'm scheduled to go somewhere and i have small children, even my own children. i don't want to see it. i therefore don't want children to see it as well. and you don't have to not use qantas, but i know i personally wouldn't.
>>
of that?
>>
because i don't want to subject my children to it. is that wrong?
>>
apparently is. sara had a conniption.
>>
we have the emts coming.
>>
what are you supposed to do, avert your eyes?
>>
you're apologizing.
>>
i am not apologizing. are they sponsoring this half hour?
>>
they are.
>>
no, they're not.
>>
i'm sure a lot of people think it's wrong.
>>
here's another thing that a lot of people think that's wrong. there's a company out there that's marketing like lingerie -- it looks like lingerie.
>>
targeting children.
>>
from four to 12-year-olds, please say something. okay?
>>
why do we have to say something.
>>
it's called lounger ie.
>>
oh, my word.
>>
the company says that these are soft and agreeable undergarments for children.
>>
agreeable to whom?
>>
i don't know.
>>
i don't think there's anything wrong with the product in itself. it's the way they pose the children and the way they sexualize them.
>>
yes.
>>
everybody likes to wear comfy cozy things and they might be a lovely product. it's the targeting and the sexualization of small children. of any children, that is wrong. now we here at nbc reached out to the company, and that's what they said.
>>
they said it was soft and agreeable undergarment for children. and there are no vulgar connotations.
>>
okay. so this, we were talking about this in the makeup room earlier, too. it's when do you talk to your kids about certain things. when is it okay for your kids -- because we're doing a segment on this later. when is it okay for kids to shave their legs?
>>
you know, there's no cut-and-dry answer to that. every child is it different. if you get a book out and it says when they're six, do this. and when you're seven, does that. if you don't know your child well enough -- it's important to parent a child yourself.
>>
how old were you when you shaved your legs?
>>
i think i was about 12.
>>
can we just stop for one second? look at the shot of
kathie lee
.
>>
now get the shot of me just for one second. [ laughter ]
>>
just letting you know what's behind us, just saying.
>>
let's move this martini out of the way.
>>
why?
>>
because --
>>
it looks great.
>>
it looks right of me, that drink.
>>
here's the funny thing, in our house, we didn't talk about anything.
>>
we didn't talk about -- sex, we didn't talk about dating, we didn't -- we never had those conversations. we just -- figured it out. nobody sat down.
>>
and you turned out okay. but a lot of people don't and i think it's important. it is part of parenting. i adore your mother, i think so much of that was cultural with your family.
>>
there are a lot of old-school parents that are uncomfortable with it.
>>
how uncomfortable are you with somebody else doing it for you, you know? everybody said you had to have the section talk with your kids by the timt they're nine years old. and i told you this story many times. i started to try when they turned eight. tried to find the right time -- by the time it was like a week away from their ninth birthday, the situation hadn't arisen, so to speak. so i just sat them down in the bathtub when they can't get away.
>>
locked the door. they're in the bathtub and you have the talk. and they both handled it just fine. i hope. i don't know. have you heard anything? tmz --
>>
they're on them.
>>
oy.
>>
we told you about the situation and how abercrombie did not want the situation to wear their clothes. now there's breaking news today, the stock for abercrombie went down 9%. hello. they thought it was probably going to be a brilliant marketing employ. like we don't want you to wear our stuff and people are going to pay attention and buy. but instead, the stock went down. so there.
>>
i don't know if that's an abberation and there's something else going on in their company. but it does seem kind of strange that it happened just like that.
>>
can we do a little i -- hoda?
>>
sure.
>>
close your eyes
, because we're on tv. think
beyonce
. think "
dream girls
." this is a
beyonce
song called "love on top." think "
dream girls
." it's a new one. go. nothing's perfect you're the one i love you're the one i need you're the only thing i see
>>
beyonce
is one talented
young woman
. this is actual music and i'm proud of you.
>>
okay, love on top. get it, get it, get it.
>>
is that from her new album?
>>
brand new. "saturday night live" is doing this thing called "seven minutes in heaven." they're
taking people
into someone's closet and having an interview with them and they're calling it "seven minutes in heaven."
>>
it took years for people to come out of the closet, now we're going in?
>>
remember what seven minutes in heaven was?
>>
no.
>>
you and the guy went in the closet for seven minutes in heaven, you never did that this.
>>
no. how many times did you do it?
>>
a couple.
>>
and you didn't have the talk.
>>
anyway, this is what it looks like.
>>
so you work one hour a day. what the hell.
>>
we have
prep time
okay, here's what we do. we go in, we have to prep. we have to read the segments. what does
la toya jackson
.
>>
you just shoved me. don't shove me, please. what's the most drunk you've done an interview.
>>
first of all, we hardly drink.
>>
yeah. good, for the record.
>>
okay. anyway --
>>
i'm uncomfortable with that.
>>
because he's so close?
>>
he's right in your
personal space
.
>>
he gets in your grill.
>>
they're up in your grill and they don't have any concept of how much you like that.
>>
go on hulu and see other people not be comfortable.
>>
okay or not okay. is it okay to remake a classic film.
>>
kathie lee
says, at your own peril.
>>
"dirty dancing." of course, can you try it. so many people are attached to classic films, it will be
hit or miss
. yes, it's okay, but why? have you ever seen a remake that eclipses a classic? the only one that came to mind, because i really wasn't too familiar with the
judy garland
one was "a star is born" with
barbra streisand
and kris
