Video: New York’s narrowest home is 9.6 feet wide

  1. Closed captioning of: New York’s narrowest home is 9.6 feet wide

    >>> say size isn't everything. a house that just hit the market here in new york city seems to prove that. it's barely wider than your living room sofa. here's "today" real estate contributor barbara corcoran.

    >> reporter: new york's west village has always had a unique flavor of its own. bohemian, artistic, and for the past few decades, expensive. celebrities like sarah jessica parker call this neighborhood home. and one distinct house has been captivating the imagination of tourists and residents for over 100 years. located at 75 1/2 bedford street, past residents include cary grant , john barrymore and the poet edna st. vincent. real estate broker paul bolson recently gave me a tour. i understand the whole house is built on a carriageway.

    >> it was, yes.

    >> is that typical of its time?

    >> it's not. this is an atypical house . everybody in new york wanted to use the space they had.

    >> and they squeezed this little house --

    >> they squeeze the this house between the two houses that were here before.

    >> reporter: i had to measure the house myself just to believe it. 9.6!

    >> i told you!

    >> reporter: at 990 square feet , it's a little like living in a dollhouse.

    >> when you come in here, it's like entering the rabbit hole . your mind expands the room and it's just a great space.

    >> let's see if that works on my mind as i squeeze through this little kitchen here.

    >> reporter: four working fireplaces, original beams and a communal garden make up for some of the home's shortcomings. what is this, an ez-bake oven? it's so tiny. so do the details justify the price tag?

    >> the current owner did put in a million-dollar renovation.

    >> reporter: what? $ 1 million ? what do you spend $ 1 million on 990 square feet ?

    >> that's a gut renovation.

    >> reporter: i want to see those receipts. a narrow staircase links all three floors for a total of seven rooms.

    >> welcome to the master bedroom .

    >> reporter: this is the master bedroom ? where would you fit a bed?

    >> we've got a bed right here. cary grant used to live here.

    >> reporter: okay. why not? and then there's the not-so-private bathroom.

    >> prettiest room in the house .

    >> reporter: no doubt. a nice clawfoot tub. what about these windows? you've got to be kidding. you'd have to be an exhibitionist to be in this tub.

    >> a little bit of a free spirit , yes.

    >> reporter: still, bo believes someone out there will appreciate the novelty. you're asking $4.3 million for this house .

    >> yes, we are.

    >> reporter: how would you justify that price?

    >> for under $6 million, you really don't get anything in the west village .

    >> reporter: and who, bo, do you picture living in this home?

    >> i think somebody who definitely has to have an open mind .

    >> reporter: you're goingrh?hp &h& need somqj?t with a really fat wallet to buy this skinny little

Story: Barbara Corcoran: From 4th floor walkup to TODAY

That’s right, 75 1/2. New York’s skinniest house has been home to actors Cary Grant and John Barrymore and poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. Built in 1873, the West Village home is 9.6 feet wide and 990 square feet.

But the skinny home has a fat asking price tag: $4.3 million.

TODAY’s real estate expert Barbara Corcoran recently got an exclusive tour of the slim digs from real estate broker Bo Poulsen, who called it “atypical” of its time.

Video: New York’s narrowest home is 9.6 feet wide (on this page)

Built in the carriage style, the wee residence was wedged between two existing homes. “Everybody in New York wanted to use the space that they have,” said Poulsen. “And they squeezed this little house in between the two that were there before it.”

Corcoran was so incredulous of the space, she measured it herself. She even questioned whether a bed would fit in the master bedroom.

While the once-bohemian neighborhood is now one of the borough’s priciest ZIP codes, with a kitchen so mini Corcoran likened its oven to an Easy-Bake, it’s hard to imagine paying so much for so little ... width.

"You know when you enter here it’s kind of like entering the rabbit hole," said Poulsen. “Your mind kind of expands the room and it’s just a great space.”

The house features three bedrooms, two baths, four working fireplaces, original beams and a communal garden. A narrow staircase links the seven rooms. And after a $1 million “gut renovation,” Poulsen believes the asking price (nearly twice what it sold for last year) is a steal. “For under 6 million you really don’t get anything in the West Village,” he said.

Market value aside, even Poulsen admitted it will take a special buyer to snap up this unique home.

“Well, I think it’s definitely someone who has to have an open mind,” he said.

  3. Fort Calhoun, Neb.

Fort Calhoun is about 10 miles north of Omaha on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River Valley. It’s a quiet town with a population of fewer than 1,000. This custom built home is on a pretty lot with mature landscaping. I like the unique angle of the front door and porch. It has an open floorplan and polished wood floors and trim throughout. The living room has a cozy distressed-brick, wood-burning fireplace. The casual dining area has big glass windows and a door to the back deck. The kitchen has wood cabs, an island and a clever desk space. The backyard has a deck, patio, big rolling lawn and beautiful Missouri River Valley views.

  5. Scranton, Penn.

Scranton, in northeast Pennsylvania, was once a coal mining and iron and steel manufacturing town. Today it’s known as the setting of the NBC sitcom “The Office”. This 1930 home is in the hill section, home to the University of Scranton and lots of historic architecture. It has a welcoming front porch and a dormer. The living room has wood floors, crown molding and extra wide baseboards. The dining room has wood floors, wainscoting and an adorable built-in window seat. The kitchen is fully updated with granite counters, an island and another sunny window seat with built-in storage underneath. The backyard is surrounded by mature trees and a privacy fence. But the lawn, patio and garden need some sprucing up!

  7. Duluth, Minn.

Duluth is a port city on the north shore of Lake Superior. It’s home to America’s only fresh water aquarium as well as the world’s longest freshwater sand bar, spanning six miles. This 1925 Tudor style home is well-kept outside and has lots of updates inside. There are oak hardwood floors and traditional woodwork throughout. The living room has a beautiful fireplace, built-in niches and fancy crown molding. The dining room has gently arched French doors. The windowed kitchen looks totally hip and modern with blonde wood cabs and black counters. My favorite room is the sunroom with two walls of windows! The backyard is partially fenced and just in need of a little gardening work!

  9. Green Mountain Falls, Colo.

Green mountain falls is a mountain community 20 minutes from Colorado Springs. It sits at 7,000 feet and is a popular spot for vacationers who love camping and hiking. This home backs right up to Pike National Forest and makes a great retreat from the city. It’s built to take full advantage of the mountain views. It has an open living room plan and the living room has doors to the wraparound deck. The kitchen has blonde wood cabs and new Corian counters. The master bedroom takes up the entire top living room with a vaulted, pyramid-like ceiling, skylights and a patio. There’s also a hot tub.

  11. Nashville, Tenn.

This 1950s ranch home is less than 5 min from Nashville’s big attractions like the Grand Ole Opry, the Opry Mills and local golf courses. It sits on over an acre-and-a-half of land and feels secluded, but is just five miles from downtown! The interior has been completely remodeled for an open, airy and very modern feel. The open living room and dining room have gleaming hickory wood floors and lead out to a huge screened in porch. The family room is flanked with windows and has a built-in wet bar. The open kitchen has granite counters and dark wood cabs and a breakfast bar. The finished basement has a master bedroom with wood-burning fireplace and private bath, a rec room and living room/laundry room. The big backyard has an unusual horseshoe-shaped deck and a fire pit. All you can see out here is luscious greenery for miles!
