Father says Lohan was set to do Letterman gig

NEW YORK — CBS wasn't alone in thinking that Lindsay Lohan was going to present the Top Ten List on Thursday's "Late Show with David Letterman."

Michael Lohan, the father of the troubled actress, told TODAYshow.com's Courtney Hazlett that hair, makeup and transportation to the studio was all set and that Lindsay had agreed to appear live via satellite from Los Angeles.

"It was set to be a funny, fun thing for Lindsay to do. It was going to be great," Michael Lohan said. "When Lindsay’s publicist Leslie Sloane and her manager Lou Taylor got wind of it, they decided for her that it was a bad idea. Leslie decides I don’t have authority to make these decisions, when in fact I have authority to do anything I want in my daughter’s life if it’s going to help her.”

For her part, Lindsay tweeted Tuesday that she would not be appearing on the "Late Show," saying, "I am NOT going to be doing David Letterman, I'm not sure how this happened, but I am sorry for the confusion ..."

CBS responded with a statement of its own on Wednesday.

"Lindsay Lohan will not be delivering a Top Ten list on Thursday's LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN, as had been previously announced," the statement read. "We made a mistake. Someone purporting to be a friend of Lindsay's reached out to the show yesterday, allegedly on her behalf, and booked her to appear. Clearly, this person was not authorized to make commitments on her behalf. We wish Lindsay well, and look forward to having her on the show in the future."

The appearance on "Letterman" would have been the fifth for Lohan. She last visited in May 2007.

Lohan's problems have regularly put her in the news, most recently thanks to felony charges for the alleged theft of a $2,500 necklace from a jewelry store.

Meanwhile, her travails have been a source of humor for Letterman. Last week he read the Top Ten Signs that "Lohan is out of control." They included: "Friends worry that her shoplifting is getting in the way of her drinking."

"Late Show" airs weeknights on CBS at 11:35 p.m. ET.
