   >>> hard to believe, the mccoy sextuplets, the world's first surviving set of seven celebrates their 13th birthday.

   >> it is pretty amazing and as you know, we have been spending a lot of time with the mccoy sextuplets throughout the years, but now we put together all 13 years of their lives into one documentary hour where you really see the strength their parents have had to raise these children. the prospect of raising a child is daunting for just about any parent. bringing up sextuplets and an older sister has been the mccoy 's challenge for the past 13 years.

   >> it really isn't a joke when people say, enjoy them, because it passes so quickly.

   >> reporter: before our eyes, kenny , alexis, natalee, kenny , nathan, randall and joel have grown into almost adults. their journey boggles the mind. in the first weeks, it was 42 bottles and 50 diapers a day. then the trying times of the early years.

   >> what is the thing that was the worst about the twos?

   >> screaming.

   >> literally there were times when we were brought to our knees.

   >> reporter: though at times overwhelmed, kenny and bobby have always gotten back up relying on a genius for patient and practicality. with a household of ten, the mccoys manage at times on a food budget of $300 a month, shopping at warehouses and growing their own produce. around the house, they put the power of numbers to good use.

   >> they have gotten to be such good helpers and we can dole out the daily chores .

   >> they do the dish washing?

   >> yes.

   >> come on.

   >> they take care of their own laundry.

   >> the mci cans are bracing for an old concern. when are you going to let them date?

   >> when they're 30.

   >> alexis has a very sincere wish.

   >> i just want more friends at school and i just want people to know that i'm just a regular girl.

   >> few things have stayed the same things 1997 . but the mccoy sextuplets story continues to fascinate some people, even as its stars turn into teenagers. in the middle of it you think it's going to last for ever and there's always going to be a tomorrow that's just like this. but it's not, it changes so fast.

   >> in fact i have a feeling i'm going to be covering them until they're 21. they actually call me aunt ann. the american sextuplets turn 13 airs tonight on tlc
