Three episodes of “Sex and the City” — directed by Michael Engler, Michael Patrick King and Timothy M. Van Patten — will compete for best-directed TV comedy.

Their other competition includes an installment of “Will & Grace” from director James Burrows and the episode of “8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter” that introduced the death of John Ritter. Actor-director James Widdoes — Hoover from “Animal House” — directed that show.

Meanwhile, three installments of “Six Feet Under” directed by series creator Alan Ball, “Misery” actress Kathy Bates and Alan Poul are nominated in the TV drama class alongside Jon Cassar for “24” and Christopher Misiano for “The West Wing.”

The guild also announced nominees in categories for variety program, soap opera and children’s programming. Winners will be announced at the 56th annual awards presentation Feb. 7.

Last week, the guild announced movie director nominations. “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” earned Peter Jackson his third consecutive DGA nomination. Also recognized were Sofia Coppola for “Lost in Translation,” Clint Eastwood for “Mystic River,” Gary Ross for “Seabiscuit” and Peter Weir for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.”
