Dennis Murphy, winner of five national Emmy awards for excellence in news reporting, has been a Dateline correspondent since 1994. Murphy is seen most often covering true-crime stories for the Friday night editions of Dateline.

In recent years, Murphy has covered everything from the Casey Anthony case, the Italian murder trial of American exchange student Amanda Knox, and the Versace shooting in Miami Beach to name a few. Murphy's non-crime coverage has ranged from a Royal Wedding profile of Kate Middleton, to the death of Osama bin Laden, to the plight of the children of migrant workers. Murphy was awarded an Emmy for team coverage of the ditching of the US Airways flight in the Hudson River and a prestigious duPont Columbia award for his reporting on Hurricane Katrina.

Before joining Dateline, Murphy was posted in the NBC News London bureau for five years, where he served as Chief Foreign Correspondent for Today, and was a regular contributor to NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. Murphy has filed stories from around the world and has covered conflicts in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Central America. He was on assignment at the Berlin Wall the night it came down.

In addition to his Emmy awards, Murphy has been honored for his journalism with Edward R. Murrow awards, a National Headliner award and a Clarion award, among others.

Before joining NBC News, Murphy worked at local stations in Seattle and Houston.

Murphy is a graduate of Williams College and lives in Florida with his wife, Marilyn.
