What’s worse than getting caught with someone else’s handbag, only to learn it contains a secret stash of cocaine? Fearing that the incident wasn’t just a hard-to-believe accident but a rather part of an odd celebutante setup.

According to TMZ, that’s Paris Hilton’s latest take on her weekend drug bust. Although the heiress simply told police the purse containing 0.8 grams of cocaine — along with her identification, credit cards, cash and prescription inhaler — wasn’t hers , the gossip website reported that Hilton added a possible conspiracy theory when she told the story to friends.

“It could be a setup,” Hilton allegedly told pals. “Everyone knows how against cocaine I am.”

Well, evidently, not the Las Vegas Police Department, but regardless of who knew what and whose bag was whose, Hilton is said to believe the whole thing could have been avoided if those police hadn’t been so "star-struck" and hadn’t “(blown) the whole thing way out of proportion.”

‘Idol’ boss still holds out hope for Elton John
“American Idol’s” head honcho believes the perfect replacement for high-profile, acerbic Brit Simon Cowell would be high-profile, acerbic Brit Elton John.

Although reps for John seem certain the singer-songwriter won’t fill the much-talked about vacancy on “Idol,” returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe still holds out hope.

“I must say, I really do love Elton John,” Lythgoe told Deadline Hollywood when asked about the presumed pool of replacements. “He’s a huge favorite of mine.”

The living legend will have the final say, which thus far has been remains a firm “no,” but Lythgoe isn’t ready to give up on the chance of a generous change of heart.

"It depends on whether (Elton) wants to give back,” the two-time “Idol” producer revealed.

    >> reporter: good morning to you, matt. according to the complaint police pound 0.8 grams of cocaine in a purse hilton was carrying but the hotel heiress continues to stand by her story the drugs were not hers.

    >> vegas is one of my favorite places on earth.

    >> reporter: those words spoken to nbc's las vegas affiliate just hours before paris hilton was arrested for allegedly having too much fun in sin city . the reality tv star was charged with cocaine possession, a felony. it happened just before midnight on friday when hilton 's boyfriend cy waits was cited for driving under the influence on the vegas strip . but hilton maintains she didn't do anything wrong.

    >> it's a very confusing story that she's telling police.

    >> reporter: now the newly released criminal complaint is shedding light on what actually happened. according to the complaint a las vegas officer pulled over hilton and her boyfriend because there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and as 100 onlookers gathered hilton asked to use the restroom and an officer accompanied her into the nearby hotel. according to the officer in the complaint, hilton reached into her purse for lip balm and as she began to open it i saw a small bindle of what i believed to be cocaine in a clear baggy begin to fall from the purse into my hand. the complaint goes on to read after i read hilton her miranda rights , she told me the purse was not hers and she had borrowed it from a friend. i asked hilton whose cocaine it was. she said she had not seen it but now thought it was gum. hilton did admit that several other items in the purse were hers, according to the report. legal analyst royal oakes says prosecutors could have a hard time proving the cocaine is hers. still, the reality tv star could be in serious trouble.
