Video: Emmy fashion: Hits and misses

  1. Transcript of: Emmy fashion: Hits and misses

ANN CURRY, co-host: This morning on TODAY AT THE EMMYS , the all-important fashions. So who sizzled and who fizzled? Our national correspondent Natalie Morales is in Los Angeles with more on this. Natalie , good morning.

NATALIE MORALES reporting: Good morning to you, Ann. Yeah, a lot of sizzle here on the red carpet and fittingly, too. It was amazing, the stars sure came out to play last night. A breakout year for hits on TV , but also right here on the red carpet .

Ms. LEA MICHELE: It's Oscar de la Renta . My jewelry is Lorraine Schwartz . And it's the perfect party dress.

Ms. HEIDI KLUM: I'm wearing Marchesa .

    MORALES: Beautiful.

Ms. KLUM: I love this short, glitzy number.

Ms. BETTY WHITE: It's an old off-the-rack things that was in the back of my closet, so I thought my not?

MORALES: Is it nice to break out of the Adidas track suit week after week?

Ms. JANE LYNCH: I have to tell you, going into my trailer every day knowing that I'm going to put something on that is so comfortable is a lovely thing.

MORALES: Wowie , what a dress.

    Ms. CHRISTINA HENDRICKS: Thank you.

    MORALES: You look great.

    Ms. HENDRICKS: Thank you.

MORALES: How much does that weigh, that dress?

Ms. RITA WILSON: Actually, not that much.

    MORALES: No?

Ms. WILSON: It's like an apron.

MORALES: What were you going for?

    Ms. EDIE FALCO: Comfort.

Ms. JULIE BOWEN: Apparently navy is quite the color of the evening.

    MORALES: I've heard that.

Ms. BOWEN: Oh, and look at January. Looks like a bird in a cage. Like a beautiful peacock.

MORALES: I hear you're a big fan of the TODAY show , right?

    Ms. SARAH WILLIAMS: I am.

Mr. JOEL McHALE: We watch it every morning.

MORALES: Who designed this great suit? It fits you just right.

    Mr. MATTHEW PERRY: Prada .

    MORALES: Prada .

Mr. PERRY: But not the Prada . Just some guy, Steve Prada .

Mr. STEVE CARELL: You know what, I just have a nicely fresh tux hanging in the closet at all times just in case.

Mr. NEIL PATRICK HARRIS: I'm nominated again, yet again. More chances to lose.

Ms. ANGELA KINSEY: Do you have your Spanx on? What?

Mr. BRIAN BAUMGARTNER: Yeah, you know it.

MORALES: Is that a man? A Manx.

Mr. BAUMGARTNER: You know, I don't even know.

Ms. KINSEY: Manx. They have them now.

MORALES: The Manx , man's best accessory. Ann , you know, I'm not a fashion expert here, but I have to say overall I think for the most part most of the stars got it right this year. Although there are some, and Bobbie Thomas will tell us, who probably could have used a little more help.

CURRY: Oh, OK. Well, you've got Bobbie sitting right there. Bobbie , good morning to you as well.

    MORALES: Yes.

CURRY: And so let's talk about, first of all...

    Ms. BOBBIE THOMAS: Good morning.

CURRY: ...the good news. Your favorite looks. And I understand both you and Natalie on who really took the big award for that, and that "Glee" star Lea Michele?

Ms. THOMAS: Oh, she was beautiful , stunning in the color of the night, navy. The silk taffeta Oscar de la Renta was gorgeous. It was still fresh and young, even though it was sophisticated. She was on trend with her Lorraine Schwartz collar necklace. Perfection. Loved it.

MORALES: And everything. Her makeup, her hair, it just did -- it was very suiting and very, you know, just perfect for her.

    Ms. THOMAS: Really great.

    MORALES: And she just glowed.

Ms. THOMAS: She was the belle of the ball. You know, with "Glee" really being a big show , this was a great night for her to step up.

    MORALES: Absolutely.

CURRY: And when it came -- comes to pushing fashion boundaries, who did you two like?

MORALES: Well, I have to say, and I think this was a look that you either loved or hated, and up close January Jones , she was wearing a beautiful Versace . I think it was beautiful because it was a very -- it had the wow factor, this blue and very fitted silhouette. It was sort of channeling her Betty Draper but yet also with a little more edge. As Bobbie says, her alter ego, Betty Draper .

Ms. THOMAS: This was -- this was definitely something people were buzzing about online. I was tweeting for our Web site live during the show and a lot of viewers thought, oh, this is not my favorite, but it's entertaining to see something. We got to see this dress. It was really kind of like Natalie said, a wow factor, her alter ego.

MORALES: It definitely had the wow factor. Now one thing, I thought the hair looked not as polished as it could, and her makeup as well.

    Ms. THOMAS: Yeah.

MORALES: But she's a gorgeous woman and she could pull anything off.

Ms. THOMAS: But another risk-taker in a similar silhouette was Anna Paquin , the newlywed from " True Blood " who stepped out in Alexander McQueen . She's the first person to wear Alexander McQueen from the spring collection, which is kind of a big deal in the fashion world. She was really dark and regal, which was fitting for her character and I think all the " True Blood " fans were very excited to see her and Stephen , her new husband, in Alexander McQueen .

CURRY: Oh, I love that dress. I think it's stunning.

    MORALES: Some body armor there.

CURRY: And she's got the body to wear it.

Ms. THOMAS: Stunning. I loved it.

CURRY: Now what about -- I understand, now, Natalie , you were talking earlier about controversy. What do you guys want to say in terms of who was not on your top list?

MORALES: Who did you not love, Bobbie ?

Ms. THOMAS: You know, I love Lauren Graham , but I did not love the silhouette...

    MORALES: Yes.

Ms. THOMAS: ...on her Yigal Azrouel dress. I thought it was a little shapeless and it didn't really flatter her frame as much as it could have. I really love her , but this was not my favorite look on her. I also though Sofia Vergara , who has the most amazing body, kind of was overwhelmed by the details in her Carolina Herrera . It was such -- you know, she's such a beautiful star. I just thought that this wasn't her best look.

    MORALES: Mm-hmm.

Ms. THOMAS: So those are kind of my picks.

MORALES: It's a very beautiful color, the canary yellow. I think on her skin tone, too, a brighter color probably would have...

Ms. THOMAS: Yeah, it's just a lot.

    MORALES: ...brought out more.

Ms. THOMAS: The hair, the detailing, it was a lot. And then Rutina Wesley from " True Blood " had a black and white print dress on that I think is a -- is a really good tip for all of us at home when you have that much fabric in a print you got to be careful.

CURRY: All right, OK, you guys. Well, it looks like it was fun, though. I thought -- I think everybody just looked so beautiful and looks like you guys had fun, too. Natalie Morales and Bobbie Thomas , thanks so much this morning.
