Stern's lawyer grills Smith's psychiatrist

LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles hospital psychiatrist critical of Anna Nicole Smith's doctor for over-medicating her has come under attack by a defense attorney.

The attorney for Smith's boyfriend Howard K. Stern on Monday accused Dr. Nathalie Maullin of weaning Smith off addictive drugs too quickly.

Maullin, who treated Smith when she became pregnant, earlier testified that Dr. Sandeep Kapoor had prescribed drugs that amounted to "overkill" for her condition.

Maullin acknowledged telling Smith's boyfriend that the detoxification of Smith may have been too aggressive, leading to a number of side effects.

Stern, Kapoor and Dr. Khristine Eroshevich have pleaded not guilty to conspiring to provide excessive drugs to Smith. They are not charged with causing her 2007 overdose death.
