I grew up fantasizing about the many technological possibilities at Judy Jetson’s fingertips. I never dreamed the day would come when I could simply press a few buttons to “zap-zoom” through a myriad of looks. I’m ecstatic to report, the cyber reality of this is just a few clicks away. While actual application of makeup is required for a real-world look, Topshop.com now offers up a fun, interactive way to try on everything from bronzer and blush to eye shadow and eyelashes. Simply upload your photo, trace your face with the help of tracking points, and in seconds you’ll see a whole new you, again and again. And better yet, TAAZ.com, the developers behind the “virtual makeover” technology, offers you even more ways to explore your look on their website. You can try new hair colors or experiment with celebrity-inspired styles, all for free and without the risk of being wrong. (Topshop.com, $8-$16)
Have you ever loved a dress but just couldn’t pull it off because it was too short or too sheer? What about a tunic that’s not quite long enough to be a dress and too big to wear as a top? Ever tried to pull on a slip, but the hem that peeks out is not pretty enough to show? Girlfriends, I understand — more than you know. I’ve spent way too many hours searching for the perfect slip, so imagine the dance of joy I did when finally found the line I’ve been looking for. By far, Farr West (pun intended) is the best of the boudoir-inspired bunch. Affordable and available in a range of colors, styles and materials, their chic, demure options add instant length with wide, beautiful hems that literally expand your wardrobe possibilities. (Farrwest.com, $28-$80)
Along with shades of sherbet, baby-blue is the hot new hue for summer. Beyonce’s blue fingertips in her recent video “Why Don’t You Love Me?” had women everywhere swooning. Unfortunately, her “Nouvelle Vague” Chanel color was selling out everywhere and similar Easter egg-inspired lacquers were hard to find in drugstore aisles. Just in time and just released this June, Perfect Formula’s brand-new polishes come in Popsicle-like colors that boast more-opaque white bases than the traditional sheer colors normally associated with the season (Perfectformulas.com, $15 each). However, if you want a jump start on one of fall’s must-have polishes, then be sure to scoop up Chanel’s Paradoxal, already being seen on celebrities like Victoria Beckham and Rachel Bilson.
Thanks to Hollywood and the haute couture runways, what was once considered an underground novelty is now moving into the mainstream. From full finger rings to alternative adornment, a new type of statement jewelry is taking center stage. Litter’s contemporary collection of body harnesses, chain garters, hand “holsters,” ear cuffs and more add edge to even the most feminine outfit and offer a twist on the traditional definition of jewelry.($85-$250; www.LitterSF.com)
And mass retailers like Urban Outfitters and Wet Seal are getting in on the trend too, offering options including the “smooth knuckle ring” (Urbanoutfitters.com; $24) as well as “shield” and “wrap” rings ($7-$8; WetSeal.com). Mama said knock you out!
