NATALIE MORALES reporting:
From yet another alleged recording of an enraged
Mel Gibson
to
Lindsay Lohan
's jail time and
Chelsea Clinton
's lavish nuptials, no shortage of celebrities making headlines this week. So here with all of the inside scoop is
David Caplan
, senior editor at
People magazine
.
David
, good morning.
Mr. DAVID CAPLAN (Senior Editor, People Magazine):
Good morning.
MORALES:
So tape number, I believe, seven or so of allegedly
Mel Gibson
.
Mr. CAPLAN:
Exactly.
MORALES:
By now, you know, I think most people have heard the voice and believe it is to be him. But what's different about this one?
Mr. CAPLAN:
This tape he actually -- he again, he, you know, throws all sorts of obscenities. Again, though, this time he throws his rage at
Timothy Dalton
, who's actually
Oksana
's ex, who with him she had a child.
MORALES:
Hm.
Mr. CAPLAN:
And he says, you know what, he says to her, `Why don't you go back to him?' He's screaming at her. And it's really a bit, you know, more of the same. But this time he sort of involves another party, and it's
Timothy
this time.
MORALES:
Is this
the beginning of the end
, or is there a lot more of this stuff out there?
Mr. CAPLAN:
These are -- this is really one of the last tapes. It is really
the beginning of the end
.
MORALES:
Sheesh. OK. Now you also, you're reporting in
People magazine
that
Mel
was seen with his nine-month-old daughter,
Lucia
, over the weekend at his church on his property. There's -- there was
someone else
, though, with him as well. Who was that?
Mr. CAPLAN:
Yeah, absolutely. It was a guardian really, who he has somebody hired to look over when he visits with
Lucia
. He's done this, the source tells
People
, because he wants to essentially pre-empt any claims that
Oksana
has saying he's a bad dad, he's hurting the daughter. So this way he's the one who requested essentially an observer really to watch him with
Lucia
, how he interacts, how he behaves. And this is someone who he totally did on his own volition and it's approved by the court.
MORALES:
And -- OK. And -- but this is somebody he obviously pays for as well, right?
Mr. CAPLAN:
Yeah. This is someone that he chose so, you know, but he'll probably be on his best behavior.
MORALES:
Oh, absolutely. Now he also has signed up for some sort of co-parenting class?
Mr. CAPLAN:
Yeah. A source tells
People
that likely is part of sort of their custody agreement that they're both going to have to enter co-parenting classes.
MORALES:
Mm-hmm.
Mr. CAPLAN:
And essentially in these classes you learn how to interact with each other, how to make things work and how to balance everything.
MORALES:
All right. Let's switch gears here and talk about
Lindsay Lohan
now in week two of her 90-day jail sentence, though it appears the time is going to be reduced significantly, is that right?
Mr. CAPLAN:
Exactly. The long...
MORALES:
How much time is she really serving?
Mr. CAPLAN:
We're going to look at about two weeks. Yesterday we spoke to the sheriff's spokesperson and they're saying she's still looking at an
August 1st
or 2nd release, which would be later this weekend. There were reports that she's getting out as early as today, this past weekend. Right now, sheriff's telling
People
this weekend.
MORALES:
And that's due to what? Overcrowding? Is that what happens...
Mr. CAPLAN:
Yeah, that's exactly. It's due to overcrowding, it's due to good behavior and she also had a couple days knocked off for sort of
time served
.
MORALES:
OK. And -- but she's not going to be released outright. I mean she's going to have to continue to serve as a probation or something, is that -- is that right?
Mr. CAPLAN:
Exactly. Yeah. And then afterwards, she has to go to rehab for
90 days
, actually. So she's not going to have much time, freedom. After prison, it's right to rehab.
MORALES:
Now there have been a lot of questions about whether or not she's getting any kind of special treatment. What has
People
found out?
Mr. CAPLAN:
Some inmates are telling
People
that they feel she is getting special treatment, that any time
Lindsay
leaves her cell there's this lockdown. But then, you know, the sheriff is telling us and the prison officials saying `No, she's not getting any special treatment. She's getting the only treatment someone who has such a high profile in a prison would get.'
MORALES:
We're seeing the inside there, the
Century Regional Detention Facility
in
Lynwood
, where she is. That's actually where
Paris Hilton
was...
Mr. CAPLAN:
Exactly.
MORALES:
...also held. And in terms of the time that she has, I hear she's getting some
junk food
...
Mr. CAPLAN:
Yeah.
MORALES:
...even. And how is she getting all this?
Mr. CAPLAN:
There's actually a separate
Web site
that they have in
LA
where essentially you can order gift packs of like
junk food
,
Kit Kat
, all sorts of candy bars.
MORALES:
What? Are you kidding me?
Mr. CAPLAN:
And there's a limit of about 135, $150 a week. And
Lindsay
very quickly went through her balance actually last week. In fact, as of Saturday, there was like 13 cents on her balance. So she's enjoying
junk food
, she's reading. Sources tell people she's sleeping a lot.
MORALES:
But I hear she's also been crying. Is that true?
Mr. CAPLAN:
She has. That is absolutely true. In fact, her lawyer told
People
that in the first hours of her stay, she was crying, one of the other inmates there saying they could hear her crying. So it's a very much of an emotional roller coaster for
Lindsay
.
MORALES:
Well, you can imagine, yeah. OK, let's switch to happier subjects, shall we?
Mr. CAPLAN:
We like that.
MORALES:
Let's talk
about the very lavish nuptials, the upcoming nuptials of
Chelsea Clinton
with
Marc Mezvinsky
. Of course, happening this Saturday. Now, it's been top secret...
Mr. CAPLAN:
Uh-huh
.
MORALES:
...although there have been a lot of leaks. We do know that -- or we expect it's going to be held at this beautiful private estate about
90 miles
north here of
New York
.
Mr. CAPLAN:
Exactly.
MORALES:
What can you tell us? Price tag that we're hearing.
Mr. CAPLAN:
You know, there's lots -- you know, there's lots of reports out there, you know, saying what the figure's going to be. It's obviously going to be -- could go into the seven figures, obviously, for such a wedding. It's going to be at that estate. It's a large mansion north of
New York
, like you said. It's actually owned and created sort of by the
Astors
, and the home is now owned by two
Clinton
donors. We know there's going to be lots of
bridesmaids as well. It's going to be heavy......and politicos, but there may not be as many celeb friends as you think that are really friends with the
Clintons
. Because a source tells
People Chelsea
and
Marc
wanted the guest list to focus on their friends, not so much, `oh, let's invite mom and dad's friends.'
MORALES:
I know.
Andrea Mitchell
, when she had a chance to speak to Secretary
Clinton
, and she said exactly that, `this is
Chelsea
's wedding and she wants it to be their friends.' But if you consider a price tag of possibly 3 to 5 million and maybe some 500 guests...
Mr. CAPLAN:
Mm-hmm.
MORALES:
...you're spending about like $6,000 a head.
Mr. CAPLAN:
It's amazing. It's a lot. But you know what, so much of the extra costs here are going into things, sort of extra security, which obviously unless, you know, a different type of wedding wouldn't have. They have these air-conditioned huge tents which cost thousands of dollars.
There's just such a......and a huge
bridal party
and just arranging the transportation. Because guests are going to have to be transported from one location to get to the final location for the wedding.
MORALES:
Mm-hmm.
Mr. CAPLAN:
So there's a lot of these extra expenses.
MORALES:
Is
People
getting in on the action? Any pictures or...
