Yes, Oprah Winfrey is doing OK indeed. The talk-show titan earned $315 million last year and was ranked No. 1 on Forbes’ Celebrity 100 list.

Pants-less pop stars, late-night warriors and sexy vampires spiced up the fame game last year, with Lady Gaga, Conan O'Brien and "Twilight" superstars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson joining the Forbes Celebrity 100 list for the first time.

But despite their impressive debuts (Gaga hit the list in fourth place), Oprah Winfrey is the year's big winner. After being ousted by Angelina Jolie on last year's list (Jolie dropped to No. 18 this year), the Queen of all Media takes back her crown on Forbes' annual ranking of the world's ultra-famous. Winfrey earned $315 million over the past 12 months.

The talk-show host choked up when announcing that this coming season of her flagship chat fest would be her last. The news helped the self-made billionaire garner more press mentions than any other member of the Celebrity 100. Winfrey earns big thanks to The Oprah Winfrey Show as well as her magazine, popular website, radio channel, TV specials and movies like the Oscar-nominated Precious. Looking ahead, her Harpo production company, which launched the careers of Dr. Phil, Rachael Ray and Dr. Oz, will introduce interior designer-turned-talk-show host Nate Berkus this fall.

Months later, the mogul will roll out the lifestyle-themed Oprah Winfrey Network in partnership with Discovery Communications.

The rest of the best
Beyonce Knowles climbs two spots to No. 2 on this year's list, raking in $87 million over the course of the year. Her 90-plus date global tour grossed more than $85 million, bolstering a portfolio that includes album sales, her House of Dereon fashion line and a slew of endorsement deals, ranging from Nintendo to L'Oreal. Continuing to expand her business empire beyond music, the female half of hip-hop's most powerful couple also released her first fragrance, Heat, earlier this year.

In at No. 3: director James Cameron. Thanks to the box office success of "Avatar," the man who once declared himself "the King of the World" pulled down a hefty $210 million over the last year. Though his 3-D film failed to win the Best Picture Oscar, it broke Cameron's own record by grossing $2.7 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing film ever. ("Titanic" had rested at the top for 12 years with $1.8 billion.) With the Blu-ray edition of "Avatar" setting sales records and a sequel in the works, expect Cameron to continue to mint money for years to come.

Earnings increase
Despite stock market swings and a global economy that seems reluctant to restart, the earnings power of the Celebrity 100 remains remarkably resilient. The stars on our list collectively earned $4.7 billion this year, up from the $4.1 billion they banked a year earlier.

The Celebrity 100, which includes film and television actors, TV personalities, models, athletes, authors, musicians and comedians, is a measure of entertainment-related earnings and media visibility (exposure in print, television, radio and online). Because of the growing power of social networks, we added a social media ranking that reflects each celebrity's presence on Facebook and Twitter. The earnings consist of pre-tax income between June 1, 2009, and June 1, 2010. Management, agent and attorney fees are not deducted.

A Gaga debut
Lady Gaga catapults onto our list, ranking ahead of much more established pop stars like Madonna (No. 10) and U2 (No. 7). She has a 106-date world tour and her willingness to partner with corporations like Virgin Mobile and Polaroid to thank for an estimated $62 million in earnings. What's more, her fame and theatricality have brought her gobs of press coverage, while her music videos have made her something of an Internet sensation. Proof: The fashion-forward rocker ranks first for social media and Web presence among the Forbes Celebrity 100.

Gaga is also the list's top-ranked newcomer, leading a group that includes the Black Eyed Peas ($48 million), O'Brien ($38 million) and "Twilight" costars Pattinson and Stewart. Pattinson comes in at No. 50 with estimated earnings of $17 million, while Stewart, who is working on fewer non-"Twilight" projects, comes in at No. 66 with a $12 million haul.

Woods stays strong — for now
Rounding out the list's top five: golfer Tiger Woods. Despite personal and professional setbacks this year (all negative publicity was extracted from this year's list), the tabloid target still managed to earn $105 million between June 2009 and June 2010. The reality: While his revenue streams have diminished post-scandal (Accenture, AT&T and Pepsi have all dropped Woods as a spokesman), he continues to generate millions from deals with Nike, Electronic Arts and Upper Deck. His golf course design business is also struggling due to the troubled global economy.

Expect to see Woods' income take a sizable dip on next year's list, a byproduct of his tarnished image and the reality of celebrity earnings at large.

Smith drops off
Dependent on new deals and fickle fans, the stars and their incomes have a tendency to fluctuate from one year's list to the next. Among this year's drop-offs is Will Smith. After ranking 11th on last year's list with $45 million, the blockbuster king fell off this year because he had no new films in the works during the time frame we analyzed.

Also absent from this year's list is rapper 50 Cent. In 2009 he ranked 50th with an impressive $20 million income. But his last album, "Before I Self Destruct," sold barely 500,000 copies and he has been out of the limelight while losing 25 percent of his body weight to play a cancer patient in the upcoming film "Things Fall Apart."

More on the methodology
The Celebrity 100 is a measure of power based on money and fame. Earnings estimates, which include income from films, television shows, endorsements, books and other entertainment ventures, are calculated between June 2009 and June 2010. Figures were rounded off where appropriate.

Additional sources include Billboard, Pollstar, Adams Media Research, The Nielsen Company and SNL Kagan. Fame is calculated using Web hits on Google Blog Search, TV/radio mentions on LexisNexis, overall press mentions on Factiva and the number of times a celebrity's image appeared on the cover of 25 consumer magazines. Social rank is calculated using metrics like Facebook friends and fans as well as Twitter followers.

Video: Oprah continues reign over Forbes list

  1. Transcript of: Oprah continues reign over Forbes list

NATALIE MORALES, anchor: So who is the most powerful celebrity? Is it Oprah , Brangelina , LeBron James or Miley Cyrus ? Well, for the 12th year, Forbes magazine is out with its list of the 100 most powerful celebrities. Lacey Rose is a staff writer for Forbes and co-editor of the Celebrity 100 list. Lacey , good morning.

Ms. LACEY ROSE (Staff Writer, Forbes): Good morning to you.

    MORALES: It's a great list.

    Ms. ROSE: Thank you.

MORALES: So the 100 most powerful celebrities, it's a combination, not just fortune, fame also playing a big part of it. This year, though, for the first time you looked at social media as well. How did that play into...

    Ms. ROSE: Sure.

MORALES: ...who you ended up picking for the top 100 ?

Ms. ROSE: We looked at -- we looked at both Facebook fans as well as Twitter followers. And what we really saw is that brought on a lot of the younger names onto the list.

    MORALES: Hm.

Ms. ROSE: These are people that are really sort of cultivating their fan base , connecting with their fans, and it's helped them.

MORALES: OK. So number one on the list, as we've talked about, and she's been holding steady there, this is actually her fourth year in a row, Oprah topping off there at number one, earning $315 million last year.

Ms. ROSE: She -- I mean, there's a case of someone working across all platforms. She has her own show, she has spin-off shows, she has radio, she has a magazine, she has specials.

    MORALES: Mm-hmm.

Ms. ROSE: She's really doing it all.

MORALES: She's an empire, the Oprah empire.

    Ms. ROSE: She is indeed.

MORALES: OK. Next, number two on the list is Beyonce . Of course married to Jay-Z , so a powerful couple there.

    Ms. ROSE: That's for sure.

MORALES: Coming in, though, with $87 million .

Ms. ROSE: And here's another example of someone that has built an empire outside of music. Of course she has popular tours and she's selling albums, but she also has endorsement deals, she has a fashion line, she now has a perfume, so she's working across all platforms and building her brand.

MORALES: It's all about that brand, exactly.

    Ms. ROSE: Exactly.

MORALES: OK. Number three on the list, James Cameron earned $210 million. Thank you, "Avatar," right?

    Ms. ROSE: Exactly.

MORALES: And he hasn't been on the list since 1999 when the list originated.

    Ms. ROSE: Absolutely. Since "Titanic."

    MORALES: Right.

Ms. ROSE: And this is a movie that's earned $2.7 billion at the box office alone and he's cashing in on it.

MORALES: There you go. OK. Another woman who's taking charge of the musical arena and making a very impressive debut at number four is Lady Gaga . And this has a lot to do with the whole social media aspect, right?

Ms. ROSE: There's no question. Here is someone who has close to five million Twitter followers, close to 10 million Facebook fans. She's really been able to connect with that fan base .

    MORALES: Mm-hmm.

Ms. ROSE: She has endorsement deals, she has tours, she has videos that sell. So she's really...

MORALES: She's become a brand in herself. Exactly.

Ms. ROSE: She's absolutely become a multimillion- dollar brand .

MORALES: OK. Now I think this one will surprise a lot of people, Tiger Woods actually held steady at number five.

    Ms. ROSE: Held...

MORALES: He was fifth last year and continued at number five even though, obviously, his public image has taken a huge hit and he's lost a lot of money in endorsements.

Ms. ROSE: It does. Over the last 12 months he was able to earn $105 million.

    MORALES: Still.

Ms. ROSE: That's both on the course and off.

    MORALES: Still. Yeah.

Ms. ROSE: Still. Still. Absolutely. He has lost deals and you'll likely see him take a hit next year when we sort of factor in those losses. But for now, he's still the top earner in sports.

MORALES: OK. Next in the top 10 , Britney Spears . She came back actually kind of quietly.

    Ms. ROSE: I think...

MORALES: Making $64 million last year.

Ms. ROSE: I think it was the music that's responsible for the comeback, it's not the personal life that's garnering the attention. She had the fifth top-grossing tour in the world. She has fragrances that sell.

    MORALES: Mm-hmm.

Ms. ROSE: She has endorsement deals. So here she is back...

    MORALES: Good for her.

Ms. ROSE: ...towards the top of our list.

MORALES: Absolutely. Number seven on the list, my favorite, Irish rock band U2 . So what is the key factor, then, for musicians to stay on the list?

Ms. ROSE: With musicians, it's really they have to be touring.

    MORALES: Mm-hmm.

Ms. ROSE: You're not making money from album sales the way you once were, so really you have to be on the road, you -- I mean, that's how you remain relevant and that's how you make money.

MORALES: And U2 did that in 2009 .

    Ms. ROSE: For sure.

MORALES: Yep. Huge tour. OK. Next, number eight, no surprise to anyone, Sandra Bullock . She had quite a year.

    Ms. ROSE: She did.

MORALES: Of course Golden Globe , Oscar winner . She earned $56 million even though she obviously had huge setbacks in her personal life .

Ms. ROSE: She did. And she certainly garnered attention for that, but she also had, yeah, as you said, two films that grossed more than $300 million at the box office . So that was a really big year on screen and off.

MORALES: OK. And I imagine next year is going to be even better.

Ms. ROSE: I think that's probably true.

MORALES: Well, next, we have our first actor on the list, Johnny Depp . He hasn't ranked on this list, I guess...

Ms. ROSE: A couple of years.

MORALES: ...in -- for a couple of years now.

    Ms. ROSE: That's...

MORALES: So he had a really strong year last year.

Ms. ROSE: Seventy-five million dollars. I'd call that quite strong.

    MORALES: Yeah, I'll say.

    Ms. ROSE: And that was...

MORALES: Take that to the bank.

Ms. ROSE: ...playing the Mad Hatter . He's the, you know, the first actor to headline two billion-dollar films with " Alice in Wonderland " and " Pirates of the Caribbean ."

MORALES: Absolutely. OK. Number 10 on the list, Madonna keeping it on the top 10 . And she was number three last year...

    Ms. ROSE: Mm-hmm.

MORALES: ...so she's fallen a little bit, but she's still keeping herself relevant, right?

Ms. ROSE: She absolutely is still keeping herself relevant. She's making a ton of money, she's still selling album sales, a "Glee" episode devoted to her...

    MORALES: Yeah.

Ms. ROSE: ...she has endorsement deals.

MORALES: That was a great episode.

Ms. ROSE: Still -- you know, if there's a measure of hipness...

    MORALES: Yeah.

Ms. ROSE: ...that may be it right now.

MORALES: Exactly. Now we should mention also the newcomers on the list, as we were talking about earlier this morning, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson from "Twilight."

    Ms. ROSE: Yeah.

MORALES: So they stay -- they're on the list. And the Black Eyed Peas actually are on the list year as well.

Ms. ROSE: They are. I mean, that comes from touring and that also comes from really accepting a lot of endorsement deals. They're a very corporate band as it were, very commercial and making a lot of money doing it.

MORALES: All right. Well, it's a fascinating list.

    Ms. ROSE: Thank you.

MORALES: You can see it all in Forbes the Celebrity 100 list on newsstands now and also todayshow.com, we have it for you posted as well. Thank you, Lacey Rose .
