The nation's largest lawyers group is calling Elena Kagan well qualified for the Supreme Court.

The American Bar Association wrote senators Thursday giving Kagan its highest rating. Kim J. Askew, the chair of the committee that reviewed Kagan's qualifications, says it reached its conclusion unanimously, with one person abstaining.

The rating comes just days before Kagan is to go before the Senate Judiciary Committee for high-stakes confirmation hearings.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the Judiciary chairman, called the rating further evidence that Kagan is fit to be an independent justice.

Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the top Republican on the panel, says he's not sure Kagan can be impartial.
