A special spring jacket can become your best investment and a signature look — especially since it’s the first thing people will see. So as we move into an “in-between” transitional season, where lightweight toppers become a style staple, it’s important to note how the distinct details and tailoring on these pieces can shift your shape for better — or worse. With so many trends to choose among, you can find a jacket that both adds to your ensemble and flatters your figure at the same time.

Modern hoodie
Calling all curvy gals: An oversized blanket-cut jacket will be your best friend this spring. In addition to helping you adjust through March’s lion and lamb days, the angular cuts on this light layer elongate and minimize curves. Break the rules and wear something short, like a little leather jacket or sharp tailored blazer, over this longer style. The unexpected hem of a cardi-wrap peeking out underneath will soften your look and act as the perfect spring styling trick.

Casual blazer
New fabrics make this polished basic feel updated and fresh for spring. Universally flattering for every frame, a blazer doesn’t have to be just for the office anymore. Light fabrics like denim, silk or linen offer versatility and can take your look from work to weekend. A denim blazer can even give your favorite little black dress an instant warm-weather update, while a linen jacket can soften your basic pencil skirts or put a sophisticated spin on summer shorts. While this style works for every woman, the structure will especially help straighter body types define the midsection.

Short trench
Don’t think of this classic just for rainy days. A short version of a timeless trench can be an excellent alternative to a suit jacket — and a great way to slim a larger bust. Just be sure to stick with single-breasted styles for a minimizing affect. And consider color! Although neutrals such as khaki and army green are always on-trend, bold, bright hues are fun way to revisit the original idea. The everyday essential adds a chic layer to jeans and a T-shirt or puts a finishing touch on a crisp blouse and pencil skirt.

Utility jacket
Hourglass gals will look great in tailored versions of the utility jacket — just look for cinching options to help define your waist. Once you find one that works for you, the key is to balance the masculine influence of this style with feminine details. Try scrunching up the sleeves to show a little skin, and work with your accessories to help soften up this tougher top layer. Mix in some color with bangles or a belt, and roll up your jeans to show off some fun kitten heels or sandals.

Cropped moto
Ladies who are leaner on the top half will definitely want to scoop up a cropped motorcycle jacket. The extra hardware will add a little substance, create visual interest and help balance triangle body types. For my girlfriends who are gifted with “girlfriends,” just be sure to opt for thin fabrics in this style, like cotton or linen. Stiff denim and leather will add bulk. And speaking of balance — a rocker-chic jacket will add a little bit of edge to sweeter silhouettes, soft pastels and flirty prints for a pretty-meets-punk appeal.
