Video: Winners and losers of red carpet style

  1. Closed captioning of: Winners and losers of red carpet style

    >> right.

    >> so those were the winners inside the kodak theater . but who stole the show on the red carpet ? for all the hits and misses, we've got today's style editor, bobbie thomas and celebrity hair stylist , jonathan anton, a hair stylist on bravo. jonathan , you look fantastic.

    >> i've been doing hair all night long, i haven't been home. on the red carpet , doing hair, to "the today show ." nonstop.

    >> first of all, sarah jessica parker . bobbie, you talked about her being a fashion risk-taker. we want to talk about her hair.

    >> yes, okay. well you know, sarah's hair to me -- it was the right idea, wrong execution. you know, you can see the back of her hair, it's almost bigger than her face. it's almost bigger than her head. it had a little bit of the "elephant man" sized back of her head going on. i didn't understand it she's so petite. too big in the back.

    >> what about the dress, bobbie?

    >> it's an interesting choice. i don't hate it. think she wanted to be avant-garde, i think she's got a lot of pressure to be carrie, " sex in the city ."

    >> aren't you supposed to be sexy?

    >> see that's the thing i'm cog to you from the style perspective, not the sexy perspective.

    >> but she still looks kind of pretty she did.

    >> i think the gown is gorgeous, it definitely was a statement. but not everybody's favorite.

    >> all right. now let's move on to cameron diaz . jonathan , you give her the best gown 'do of the night.

    >> i give her the best everything of the night. i think she absolutely looked amazing. i'm hear oh, from bobbyie. but i'm telling you, her hair and dress -- she usually does a lot of color. i loved how she had the old-school classic, timeless, hollywood look. i loved her hair, i loved heifer makeup. i'm sorry, bobbie, i loved her dress.

    >> cameron is a beautiful woman, but i felt the hair was a little dated. and it made the dress a little matronly.

    >> it does look like 40s.

    >> when you top it off, without the dress, when you see the whole look --

    >> when you see her without the dress?

    >> when you see just the hair and makeup .

    >> i was talking about the dress, of course.

    >> got it, okay. demi moore , jonathan , you liked what she was doing with her hair?

    >> i liked, i like demi's whole look last night. i thought it was a great back-do. a really loose, kind of the new up-do. it's a back-do. it's loose, swept on one side. i thought she looked incredible. i didn't like the color of her dress. but i liked the dress. i thought demi looked hot.

    >> what did you think of the color of the dress, bobbie?

    >> i think it's pretty, she's done it before, she looked beautiful in that color.

    >> sandra bullock , you didn't have much to say on that?

    >> oh, yes, she was probably one of my favorites, stun being, statuesque.

    >> how about sandra bullock . i loved sandra bullock 's dress, i thought it was to me one of the best dresses of the night.

    >> timeless, loved it.

    >> what did you think about her hair?

    >> i thought sandra looked absolutely beautiful. she -- she looked hot. i like sandra's hair down.

    >> i love when she does the side part. it really suits her face. and the fuschia lips really popped.

    >> i think her lips could have been more red instead of purply.

    >> but she looked hot, obviously.

    >> now there are a couple of fresh faces you wants to talk about.

    >> i'm so excited to see so many great new faces on the carpet. gabby.

    >> gabourey sidibe, i'm such a big fan of her.

    >> kerry mulligan, we've got just so many exciting new actresses.

    >> gabby stopped by earlier, still wearing the dress and it looked great.

    >> she was in marchesa, kerry mulligan in prada. anda kendrick. so many nice young girls on the carpet that were stepping out in style.

    >> how about kristen stewart ?

    >> great. i was so excited to see her stay true to her edgy sensibility. it was a monique lhullier gown, it looked great.

    >> and how about the hair for the new up-and-comers?

    >> how about kerry mulligan's short cut?

    >> i thought kerry mulligan's hair loogs looked great. and elizabetta canalis , i did her hair last night.

    >> you were on the red carpet with george and elizabetta canalis , does george clooney ever look bad? never. i tried to do his hair last night. and he said, no, i'm cool with it. look at how great her hair looks, nice and natural, pretty. that was the best hair of the night by far. you know about the little story -- i'm doing elizabetta canalis 's hair and the back of her dress, her zipper broke open and the assistant jumped in with a needle and thread and started sewing the back of her dress and george said, hold on a second. i have experience with this iced to work on suits, honey. he grabbed the needle and thread and started sewing her zipper and i got to tell you something. he did an amazing job at cross-stitching --

    >> george clooney does it all.

    >> remember how he wanted to --

    >> i didn't know he was a crafty, d.i.y. diva.

    >> he's the man. my hair, george 's tailoring.

    >> there isn't enough to hate george clooney . he does it all. and --

    >> he can sew. he makes his own clothes. unbelievable.

    >> jonathan anton, bobbie thomas, thank you so much. for more oscar looks and to vote for your favorite red-carpet fashion, log on to our website,

Why the face, George Clooney?

The typically jocular Clooney seemed to be in a less than stellar mood during Sunday’s Oscar ceremony. On more than one occasion, cameras caught Clooney with an expression one might have while watching a pre-flight safety film, not an Oscar ceremony, in which you’re nominated for best actor. So what was his problem?

According to one person close to Clooney, nothing at all.

“He was in a fine mood,” the source said. “Before the show he was basically the only actor to go to the area where fans are corralled, he walked the carpet with (girlfriend) Elisabetta (Canalis) in a totally fine mood, he went to his seat and watched the show, end of story.”

And Clooney’s rep Stan Rosenfield insisted all was well, saying the star “was fine, just under the weather ... happens,” Rosenfield said, adding that Clooney’s grimaces during co-host Alec Baldwin’s opening monologue were part of a planned back and forth between the two.

Earlier theories out there about Clooney being put off about not winning an Oscar didn’t hold up. On the red carpet, he predicted that he and his “Up in the Air” co-stars, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick, who also were nominated, wouldn’t be taking home an award.

“It's probably not going to be Vera or Anna, and it's certainly not going to be me,” he said. “But what you do know is that a nomination for Vera and Anna changes their career. They will suddenly be first on the list to get jobs and that is a tremendous jump in their careers.”

Finally, there was one more theory about Clooney’s mood. “It’s a long show,” said the source. “Believe it or not, these things can get a little boring.”

Explaining the Kanye moment at the Oscars
If there was any tension between two people at the Oscar ceremony, it wasn’t between exes Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron — it was between the winners in the best documentary short category.

Producer Elinor Burkett and director-producer Roger Ross Williams took to the stage for their acceptance speech for their film “Music by Prudence.” Williams began to do his thanking, but before long, Burkett stepped in to do a Kanye West-esque takeover of the mic and speech. It didn’t matter that the duo were not mainstream celebrities; the behavior was clearly strange and unlike most events of the night, entirely unexpected. As it turns out, there’s a back story here and it involves a huge fight between the two, a lawsuit, and an even an accusation from Burkett that Williams’ mother “took her cane and blocked” her from getting up to receive the Oscar (which Williams denies).

Salon was able to reach both Burkett and Williams after the ceremony, read both sides of their stories here.
