The weekend is expected to be a somber one for friends of Farrah Fawcett. Her longtime partner Ryan O’Neal told People magazine that Fawcett “stays in bed now,” and her treatment “has pretty much ended.”

According to a friend of Fawcett’s, O’Neal’s interview also is a cue that it was acceptable to begin preparing for the inevitable.

“When Ryan spoke out like that, it was like a sign that it was OK for the goodbyes to begin,” said the friend. “We’ve all wanted to remain positive for as long as possible.”

According to the friend, Fawcett isn’t totally aware of how much the public cares about her. “She knows there’s tremendous support, but really right now is about being with her family and close friends.”

Canada tries to seal its border from Lohan
The U.S. isn’t the only country watching its southern border a little more closely these days.

When Lindsay Lohan landed in Montreal on May 2, she was held for an hour at customs. No, there was no swine flu suspicion — Lohan's 2007 DUI arrests caused the delay.

“Because of her DUIs, they didn’t want to let her in the country at first,” a source told Hot Stuff. “The customs people gave her a really hard time.”

The delay made Lohan late for her scheduled appearance at Tribe nightclub, but she told Us, “It was fine!”

Mel Gibson & Oksana plus eight?
Just weeks after Mel Gibson filed for divorce from Robyn Moore, his wife of 29 years, Gibson attended the April 28 L.A. premiere of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” with his girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva. Naturally, now that his significant other is revealed, baby rumors are afoot.

“His wife, Robyn, is telling all her friends that Oksana is pregnant with Mel’s baby,” according to and insider who spoke to Life & Style. “Robyn really doesn’t understand why he wants another child at his age, but she says she knows the woman is pregnant. I get the impression Robyn confronted Mel about it, and he admitted it.”

Gibson and Moore have been separated for three years. “It’s nice to see him getting out and enjoying himself,” Gibson’s rep said about his recent public appearance with Grigorieva.

Celebs and Scoop are heading to D.C.
Slideshow: Celebrity Sightings This weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington D.C. is going to attract an awards-show worthy crop of celebrities — in fact, the list is too long to put here.

But if you want to receive text updates about which celebs are out and about, text “Scoop” to 622639.

And since I will be in D.C. for the weekend, that means I won’t be with my mom on Mother’s Day. And since this is my column, I get to do this: Mom, I love being Nedra Hazlett’s daughter. I’ll miss you on Sunday. Happy Mother’s Day!

Weekend box office at warp speed
Video: ‘Star Trek’ worth the hype? It’s another no-brainer weekend: “Star Trek” is definitely going to come in first at the box office. The only question is how much money it will rake in.

This film’s challenge is to get a new generation of Trekkies into seats. Having J.J. Abrams at the helm of this film should help with that, and stars Chris Pine (Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Spock) will definitely draw in some of the female crowd.

Also out this weekend, “Next Day Air,” which will do terribly, and “Adoration,” a weighty movie that delves into the ethics of terrorism. It won’t make big bucks, but is a good counter-programming choice.
