MSNBC.com won the 2006 Online Journalism Award for general excellence in online journalism among large sites and was also awarded top honors among large sites for outstanding use of multiple media, The Online News Association announced Saturday in Washington.

The second award honored Rising from Ruin, the site's in-depth coverage of two towns’ recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

“This is a huge honor,” said MSNBC.com Editor in Chief Jennifer Sizemore after the association's annual awards ceremony. “The journalists at MSNBC.com are the best in the business, and now what they deliver to our readers every day has been recognized by the best in the industry.”

Roanoke.com, the Web site of The Roanoke (Va.) Times, received the award for general excellence among medium sites.

The Center for Public Integrity was named the winner in the category for small sites.

NOLA.com and SunHerald.com were recognized for having the best breaking news performance for their coverage of Katrina.

Recognition for outstanding use of multiple media among small sites went to The Montgomery Advertiser.
