In many households, coffee makers are the most treasured appliance under the roof. So when it comes to buying one, make sure you know what you’re doing. As part of TODAY’s “Home-Improved” series, Consumer Reports’ editor Dan DiClerico is sharing what you need to know when it comes to buying your beloved coffee maker, aside from taste.

When it comes to cost...

If cost is the most important element when it comes to buying your coffee maker, DiClerico suggests focusing on drip machines. Models start at approximately $30 and often include carafes so you can easily make coffee for a group. Overall, these machines will deliver the best value for your dollar.

When it comes to convenience...

If preparing your coffee seems like a daily grind, consider purchasing a "pod" or single-serve coffee maker. They are significantly more expensive to own and operate than drip coffee makers, as packets can run 55 cents to over $1 a piece, but they will deliver a cup of coffee with just the touch of a button.
