Skip the high price tag that comes with most art pieces and create your own. Designer Danielle Oakey shows here how to take a basic piece of canvas and transform it into a piece of art. All you need is a canvas and some acrylic paints, both of which can be found at any craft store.

    White and bright -

One of the best ways to make a statement in a room is to take a collection of items and group them together on a shelf, mantel or table. In this space, I took white and metallic objects that my client already had and accessorized an entire bookshelf with them.

If you use accessories you already own or spray paint existing objects, this project could cost you nothing!

    Recover and refresh -

You can find beautiful artistic books at places like Anthropologie and Barnes and Noble but they are usually rather expensive. For a lot of my installs, I buy old books at thrift stores and cover them in pretty scrapbook paper. It's an expensive idea that adds color and pattern to a room.

    Windows that wow -

Window treatments can complete alter a space, and with this DIY, curtains can be a very inexpensive addition. Snag up a pair of white curtains, like these from IKEA, and add stripes of colored fabric throughout, as I did here with yellow fabric that I found for $3 a yard.

    Dipped baskets -

Baskets dipped in white are a major trend this year, and the best part about it is that it's easy to replicate the look for less. Pick up inexpensive baskets at Home Goods, then paint the bottom of them with white spray paint to get that "dipped" effect. You could do this with large baskets and put them in a corner to hold blankets and toys.

    Green and gorgeous -

It's becoming increasingly popular to incorporate trees or greenery with huge flowy and organic leaves and branches into home decor. A popular favorite is the fiddle leaf fig tree. You can get great impact in your living room with this silk plant in a corner or on a table.
