What to do when the entertaining heart of the home — the living room — is a blank slate with zero personality? This was the dilemma faced by one New Jersey couple, who had absolutely nothing in common with their bland living room and its dated, leftover furniture.
Thankfully, HGTV magazine had some ideas. In the October 2016 issue of the magazine — also its fifth birthday issue — this couple’s drab space received a bright and cheery makeover. Using a combination of sophisticated paint colors and playful patterns, the living room was completely transformed to look remarkably different.
If you love what you see, and are inspired to try this transformation, here are five ways to incorporate color and pattern into any space:
1. Cozy it up with paint
Everyone knows a fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to change a room. The team at HGTV magazine used a deep gray (“Down Pipe” by Farrow & Ball) to make this large space feel cozier. Use it on panelling and trim to unify the different features.

2. Create an accent wall with wallpaper
The idea of using wallpaper might bring flashbacks of horrid home trends from the past, but updated designs make this a decor trick you might want to consider. Gone are the days of entire rooms plastered in busy floral prints. Instead, make a statement wall with one beautiful design. The team used the exotic-looking Ovington in Flint available at fschumacher.com.
3. Mix and match furniture
Not all pieces of furniture have to go together — if you do it right, of course. For this space, the team used facing sofas but switched things up with different designs and colors. While the white camelback sofa from Ballard Designs gives off a formal vibe, the bold blue velvet one from West Elm makes the room feel less stuffy.
4. Give the room a splash of color with curtains
Make your panels stand out against the walls with a bold hue. The HGTV magazine team used emerald green sheers here, lining them to make the color look even richer.
5. Have fun with the rug
A colorful statement rug will give the room a vibrant yet cozy feel. This 8x10 foot one from Aelfie is big enough for both of the sofas’ front legs to fit on it.
