We love surprise twists. So when we stumbled upon this California-esque beach dwelling via the pages of Domino Magazine, we were thrilled to learn that this modern home isn't far far away on the left coast, but instead firmly planted close by in Holgate, NJ (Jersey Shore, represent!)

The home belongs to New York City dwellers Michele Promaulayko, Editor-in-Chief of Yahoo Health, and her boyfriend Jay Maxwell, a builder by trade. They've spent the greater part of a decade dreaming, planning, building, and designing their dream house, which sits just hours from NYC.

The house was designed with a reverse floor plan so that the common areas, located upstairs, are exposed to postcard views of the Atlantic.

Beachy design elements fill the home.

Promaulayko enlisted designer Hilary Hayes to help with the structural and interior design. They worked together to create a chic, beachy vibe inside the home.

“We kept the colors clean and light,” says designer Hilary Hayes. “We wanted to pay homage to the home’s beach atmosphere while staying far away from kitsch."
