The worst pickup lines ever...and why guys use them

"How much does a polar bear weigh? Enough to break the ice!"“This line has been making its rounds lately. "How much does a polar bear weigh? Enough to break the ice!"
“This line has been making its rounds lately. She may find it corny, but it’s funny enough to give you the break you need,” says Christopher Brya, author of WTF Are Men Thinking?, which reports that 48 percent of men actually rely on pickup lines regularly.

"Do you believe in love at first sight...or should I walk around you three or four more times?"
Let’s be honest. Most women still want to believe in love at first sight, says author and Dating Coach David Wygant.

"If I said you have a gorgeous body, would you hold it against me?"
This one is generally reserved for the "drunk girl at a bar at 2 a.m.,” says Jordan Harbinger, cofounder of The Art of Charm. Then again, most women like to be thought of as beautiful?

"Go ahead. I give you permission to pick me up."
Guys think you think confidence is good. They just don't realize “there’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance and the majority of men and women cite cockiness as their number one turnoff,” says Brya.

"I forgot my phone number, can I have yours?"
“I wouldn’t expect this to work…but it’s a no pressure and slightly funny way of asking for her number,” says Harbinger.

"I was trying to have a guys' night out and you just totally ruined it by being so cute."
Why do guys think is a good one? “Surprise is a proven attraction stimulator and charm...well, what else do you need to say about charm?” says Dave Singleton, author of Behind Every Great Woman There’s a Fabulous Gay Man.

"Wow, you must work out a lot!"
This one is somehow kind of flattering and offensive at the same time.

"Can I get a picture of you so I can show Santa what I want for Christmas?"
“Men are intimidated by the idea of approaching women, there’s a fear of rejection or looking stupid,” says Patty Brisben, Founder of Pure Romance. By using humor, “if it doesn’t work, he’ll be able to laugh it off.” And if it works, you’ll have a photo of your first meeting…ahhh.

"What do you like for breakfast?"
Because sometimes, all it takes is a little confidence.

[Guy puts out his hand] "Will you hold this while I go for a walk?"
Seriously? How is this not a little bit adorable? “This line introduces a form of intimacy before you’ve even asked for her name,” says Brya. Which is kind of a good play.

"Is that a mirror in your pocket because I can see me in your pants?"
This is a good example of a double standard line: it usually only works if you’re a girl picking up a guy. Afterall, “95% of guys claim that they like a girl to make the first move,” says Brya. But guys still try it because it's so ridiculous it's funny.

"You look like trouble!"
A little teasing can go a long way. And nothing gets the flirtatious juices flowing faster than a little challenge.

"I bet you $50 you're not going to talk to me."
This one is a big gamble but if the guy is HOT, and he says it with a cute smile, perhaps it’s a bet you wouldn’t mind losing?

"Miss, I think you just dropped something...my heart."
This line actually works sometimes but, as Singleton suggests, probably better if you were on a hayride versus at a black-tie event.

"I had to come over and see if your personality is as amazing as your smile."
“We polled 1,000 women about questions they wanted to ask men, one of the most common: ‘What’s more important: looks or personality?’” says Brya. Men know this. “This line strikes a balance between both.” It's a pretty smart move.

"Are you from Tennessee? Because you're the only ten I see!"
This one is a guaranteed good laugh.

"You might as well kiss me because I'm going to tell everybody we did it anyway."
The truth always works.

[Guy gestures to his shirt] "Excuse me do you know what material this is? I'm actually pretty sure it's boyfriend material."
“It’s innocent. It’s interactive. It’s funny. And it’s easy to follow,” says Brya. “This line may even make a woman smile, which is the goal...besides getting her to talk.”

"If I follow you home, will you keep me?"
Guys think this is cute. We think it's part booty call, part only kind-of clever and 100 percent creepy.

"Hello. Are you taking applications for a boy/girlfriend?"
...because the number one thing you want to be doing when you're out is conducting impromptu interviews.
