‘Dear World’: Boston Marathon survivors return to finish line

Nearly one year after the Boston Marathon bombing, photographer Robert X. Fogarty and his team captured portraits of these survivors and first responders as they reflect on their healing and recovery.

As the first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing nears, survivors and first responders returned to the finish line.

Photographer Robert X. Fogarty and his team captured their portraits as they reflect on a year of healing and recovery.

For Celeste Corcoran, a double amputee who was injured along with her daughter while cheering on her sister on April 15, 2013, it was her first time back at the finish line. "I had never been back and for me this was about reclaiming it," she said. "That finish line has been a negative space since the marathon. I chose to be there. I took back control.”

Fogarty photographed the survivors for his ongoing "Dear World" project, which has also included images of Syrian refugees in Jordan and survivors of Hurricane Sandy in New York and of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

"These survivors show us what it means to keep moving forward,” Fogarty said. “And I’m honored and humbled that many of them said that the 'Dear World' experience has been another component to their healing.”
