Biscuits and gravy represent one of life's greatest pleasures. To make the perfect sausage gravy, try this to-die-for recipe from Jesse Goldstein of the Loveless Café in Nashville, Tenn.
- 1/2 pound pork breakfast sausage
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- Salt to taste
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (use more or less for your own personal taste)
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the pork sausage until browned, crumbling into smaller pieces as it browns. Add the flour and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Combine the milk with the flour and sausage and bring to a simmer. Add salt to taste, black pepper and cayenne and stir until blended. This gravy is great with biscuits but also wonderful with grits or mashed potatoes.
