Food has always been popular — and by popular, we mean essential to living — but people have never spoken about it the way they do now...or tweeted, Instagrammed, Pinned, and generally social media-ed about it.

So what food have we all been #obsessed with this year?

According to Twitter, the most-tweeted food hashtags of 2016 include the usual suspects — #chocolate, #wine and #coffee — but also some surprises.

And, of course, we can thank Queen Bey for #1.

1. #Lemonade

There are some queens so powerful they can drastically influence a market outside their own. In Bey's case, she proved she's not just a musical powerhouse, but a game-changer when it comes to food. First, her lyrics helped spike sales at Red Lobster, and then she boosted the lemonade industry. Yes, sales of the actual citrus-y juice went up following the album's release.

"I had my ups and downs, but I always find the inner strength to pull myself up," says Hattie White, Jay-Z's grandmother on Beyonce's revolutionary visual album Lemonade. "I was served lemons, but I made lemonade."

If you believe the speculation, Beyonce was served infidelity — and she responded by making a platinum album. And, according to Twitter, it was so powerful it was all we could talk about.

2. #Coffee

People love nothing more than snapping pics of their whimsical latte art — and, apparently, talking about that whimsical latte art on Twitter. And how badly they need caffeine. Especially on #Mondays.

3. #Vegan

This one took us a bit by surprise. Sure, we know vegans like to talk about being vegan on social media, but we underestimated the meatless movement in this country.

Want to give it a try yourself? Check out this recipe from Chef Chloe Coscarelli, a major face of veganism, and the creator of the vegan restaurant empire by CHLOE. She's helped popularize things like vegan cheese and raw cooking, and her food will make you forget about meat entirely.

5. #Pizza

Ah, pizza. The ultimate symbol of relability. The designated food of Netflix and chilling. Everyone loves pizza. When a celebrity says they love pizza (read: Jennifer Lawrence) we think, Wow, she's just like us. Making this pierogi pizza is the perfect way to celebrate the trend before 2016 comes to an end.

6. #Water

Either people are really dehydrated or Twitter users are talking about all the issues surrounding water this year. Stories from Standing Rock and Flint, Michigan have landed in the headlines numerous times in 2016, and promise to continue to be talked about in the coming year.

7. #Chocolate

As insane food trends come and go — like rainbow-ing or burrito-ing — chocolate just sits there, laughing at us. It's not going anywhere: expect this to be back on the list in 2017. Take it from us: This chocolate crunch pie is no fad.

8. #Beer

Sure, there are still plenty of times and places when a cheap beer is perfect for the occasion, but there's a growing movement to treat the beverage more like wine — and for people to tweet, apparently, about their beers of choice as a way of expressing their taste. And beer's not just for drinking — check out Al's beer can chicken for another magical use:

9. #Breakfast

Maybe people are starting to realize that breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. And since this meal includes genius culinary creations like bacon and waffles, it's also the tastiest one.

10. #Starbucks

Apparently the pumpkin spice phenomenon isn't going anywhere. The coffee giant — which just keeps cranking out the crazy seasonal creations — still has a firm grasp on the American people. There will be a day when #Starbucks is a more popular hashtag than #Coffee. People will ask others to go out for a cup of Starbucks. It's the Kleenex effect. You heard it here first.
