And they're off... to sip Kentucky Derby drinks
Ted Allen, host of of “Queer Eye For the Straight Guy” and author of "The Food You Want to Eat: 100 Smart, Simple Recipes," introduces his own personal twist on the Kentucky Derby's well-known "mint julep" and Cinco De Mayo's "margarita."
- 6 ounces frozen blackberries
- 10 ounces ice
- 4 ounces bourbon
- 4 ounces simple syrup
- Fresh mint sprigs
Place ice and berries in food processor and pulse until coarsely crushed. Pack ice and berries into traditional 10-ounce silver cups. Add simple syrup and bourbon. Garnish with mint.
- 2 ounces pomegranate juice
- 1 cube frozen orange juice
- 6 ounces Perrier or San Pellegrino
- 2 sprigs mint
Crush 1 mint sprig in the bottom of a rocks glass. Add the pomegranate juice and the orange-juice cube. Top with Perrier or San Pellegrino and garnish with the other mint sprig.
- 8 ounces vodka
- 1 jalapeno pepper
- 8 ounces ruby red grapefruit juice
- 1 Grapefruit, cut into small slices for garnish twists
- Kosher salt (optional)
Slice jalapeno in quarter-inch slices and infuse vodka for 2 hours (or longer if you want it spicier/grassier). Rim four martini glasses with a slice of grapefruit juice and dip in salt, if desired. Working in two batches (two drinks each), pour vodka and grapefruit juice into a shaker over ice; shake until very, very cold, and strain into glasses. Garnish with grapefruit twist.
