There aren’t many people who would pay money for a slice of stale wedding cake; that is, unless it’s a slice from the royal wedding cake. Days after the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first anniversary, a piece of their eight-tiered fruit cake is going up for auction. The cake, which was served at a lunchtime reception for close friends and family, comes in a white and gold decorated tin, along with a slip that reads "With best wishes from TRH (Their Royal Highnesses) The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in celebration of the wedding of TRH the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge."
Also included is the 16-page "Order of Service" from Westminster Abbey, which includes the vows, hymns and prayers from the wedding.
Also up for auction is a slice of Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding cake, although it's by no means the first to be sold. In 2008, one buyer paid $1,830 for this little bite of history. Included in the lot is a slice of cake from the wedding of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, along with silver printed wedding breakfast cards, the official invitation, two tickets and the "Order of Service."
"They're two lovely pieces of royal memorabilia, and rarely seen on the market as they are only gifted to close friends and family who attend the weddings," said Adrian Roose, director of PFC Auctions. "The royal section of our auction is particularly strong and interest in the royal family is sky high."
The online auction starts on Thursday with a starting bid of $162, and closes on May 24.
