For National Sandwich Day, five 'Insanewiches'

Who needs bread? The Breakfast Club is made with waffles, lettuce, tomato, turkey breast bacon and mayo, and is topped with vanilla ice cream and maple syrup.

While a sandwich is an American staple any day of the year, Nov. 3 is the day to revere the humble lunchtime favorite. To celebrate National Sandwich Day, we reached out to Adrian Fiorino, creator of the "Insanewiches" blog and book, which feature — you guessed it — some out-of-this-world sandwiches.

Fiorino, whose dad and brother are chefs, started the blog as a way to combine his two loves — food and humor—and it quickly became a sensation (after all, TODAY.com knows how much people LOVE looking at sandwiches).

Fiorino told us he’s still not sure what sandwich he’ll be munching to celebrate the holiday (“I prefer to be spontaneous...some of my best insanewiches happen accidentally!” he told TODAY.com). But the 36-year-old Toronto resident says he knows what he won't be eating. 

“Over the past few years, I’ve experimented with some pretty bizarre food combos (ever try chocolate, bananas and bacon?), but there’s one ingredient that you'll never ever find in one of my insanewiches — anchovies! I just can't stand the smelly little critters!” he said.

We asked this icon of sandwich creativity to share his five picks for the craziest concoctions, and explain why they are so much more than meat between two slices.

What to make your own Dadwich? Fiorino shares his recipe:

Ingredients

  • 2 large pieces soft flatbread or pita
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, sliced salt and pepper to taste
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 5-ounce strip loin steak
  • 2 slices yellow cheddar
  • 2 slices Gouda

Instruments:

Cast-iron grill pan, nonstick skillet, oven mitts, tongs, chopping board, chef’s knife, kitchen shears

Assembly:

Place grill pan in oven under broiler for at least 10 minutes, until hot. Meanwhile, cut out the bread shape (necktie) required for this sandwich. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil to nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add onions, salt, pepper, and paprika and sauté for 5–7 minutes or until soft. Set aside. Lightly coat steak with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Using oven mitts, carefully remove grill pan from oven and place steak in pan. Place back in oven under the broiler for 3–4 minutes, remove, flip steak with tongs and place back in oven for 3 more minutes. Remove grill pan from oven and let steak rest on a separate plate. After the steak has rested for a few minutes, place it on chopping board and slice thin with chef’s knife. Place first piece of bread on a plate and assemble as follows: slices of yellow cheddar, steak, Gouda, onions. Top sandwich with second piece. Some cheese will most likely overhang; cut away any excess.
