May 23rd is the day to celebrate the sticky, sweet confection. According to Atlantic City lore, salt water taffy, one of the sweet's most popular versions, earned its name through an appropriately sticky situation. During a big storm in 1883 that overtook the New Jersey coastal town, confectioner David Bradley's candy store was flooded. Shortly afterward a little girl came in inquiring whether he had taffy for sale, to which he responded jokingly, "Only saltwater taffy." She bought it anyway, and the name -- just like the candy -- stuck.
