March 4 is National Pound Cake Day, the perfect opportunity to indulge your sweet tooth with a decadent loaf of this long-popular cake with roots dating back to the early 18th century.

Ever wonder why we call it a “pound cake"? It’s not because you feel like you’ve gained one after it’s all gone (though that may be true). The cake’s name actually comes from the 1:1:1:1 pound ratio of flour, butter, eggs and sugar that it requires.

Modern bakers aren’t necessarily wedded to that ratio. Some prefer lightened-up versions of the classic treat, and pound cake has proven to be a natural medium for culinary improvisation.
