Ham and cheese, turkey club, BLT, tuna on rye. Are you tired of the same old sandwiches? Want to make something silly and spooky for Halloween? Dig into these awesome, edible creations by art director Kasia Haupt Canning.
Canning started creating sandwich monsters in 2008, but really began to focus on her unusual hobby about two years ago. "There are so many charming cupcakes and sweets out there but outside of Japanese bento, I don’t think enough people are making art out of savory ingredients" she told TODAY.com.
Canning admits that she doesn't always intend to make monsters. "Any person or animal made out of bread and meat and olives starts to look a little spooky. She hears a lot of, “Oh that’s so cute!! But kind of creepy.”
She would like people to get crazier with their sandwich ingredients. "Why not a lasagna sandwich? Beef jerky sandwich? Or a hamburger/hot dog combo sandwich?"
Her tastes aren't limited to Halloween. She has made an Uncle Spam for Fourth of July, a Ho-Ho-Hoagie for Christmas, Lepre’corned Beef for St. Patrick’s Day and a Punxsutawney Phil’ly Cheesesteak for Groundhog Day. Canning says she has a lot of fun thinking of the names, and sometimes will have a general idea for a sandwich, but won’t let herself create it until she figures out the right pun. Other times a name will pop into her head, and she'll work backwards to envision how to bring it to life.
