Update, 3 p.m. ET: The jewelry store where Lindsay Lohan allegedly stole a $2,500 necklace has issued a statement about why they chose to release surveillance video of the actress. "Most important, we were upset with the various mischaracterizations we were seeing and hearing about the video and its contents, and we felt the video should be allowed to speak for itself. There were also many media inquiries asking for release of the video, which is not any sort of secret evidence. The bottom line is we felt there was far too much speculation about the video recording, and that it was right for the public to be able to see the video itself. The video would be released during the actual trial anyway, as has been explained by several prominent criminal attorneys. Release of the video at this time does not violate any law, and we believe its release should have no impact on the outcome of the criminal proceeding," read the statement.
It appears that the question of whether Lindsay Lohan stole a necklace from a Venice, Calif., jewelry store will be decided in public before the courts get to come to any conclusions.
"There has been a tremendous amount of media speculation about an incident which took place on January 22, 2011 at a Venice, California jewelry store named Kamofie and Company. As a result of the incident, actress Lindsay Lohan has been charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office for alleged felony theft of a diamond necklace," Necklacevideo.com posted on a site apparently devoted to the matter. "Speculation as to what occurred that day has been the subject of intense rumor in the media and elsewhere. Many individuals want to be able to see the video streams from the jewelry store’s surveillance cameras, and we have obtained the exclusive license for them. The tapes speak for themselves."
The site promises to release the video streams "at this site shortly," but didn't clarify when they'd go live beyond that. Lohan is due in court again March 10.
