'Voice' host Carson Daly: Instant Save isn't a spoiler, it's 'empowering'

"The Voice" implemented its new Instant Save feature on Tuesday night, but the twist hasn’t yet caught on with fans or the artists.

Once the bottom three performers were revealed, host Carson Daly opened up a five-minute window for viewers to cast their votes via Twitter for the singer fans wanted to remain in the competition. Team CeeLo's Kat Robichaud was the lucky recipient of the viewer save.

While the Instant Save has been touted as one more opportunity for America to influence the outcome of "The Voice," some viewers have expressed concerns that it excludes those who aren’t on Twitter, as well as those in the time zones where the competition does not air live.

After Tuesday’s results, Daly addressed those concerns for TODAY.

“The idea is that if you're an avid fan of the show, you follow us on Twitter, you will get an alert of who's in the bottom three on Tuesday night,” he explained. “Now if you watch the show, you're voting on Monday night's performances. You've seen who you want to move on and you'll well know of those three names, who you want to vote for, even if you haven't seen the results show.

“We're not doing anything new in the Tuesday show that would alter the option of voting. The votes are all based on Monday's show.”

As for the question of tape-delayed viewers having to spoil the results show for themselves if they want to participate in the Instant Save?

“We're willing to give that up to open up the idea of a fourth wall being ripped down for Americans to totally take control of the last five minutes of the show,” Daly said. “That is way more, we think, empowering to our audience than what one would call a spoiler.”

Reaction to the Instant Save was divided among the contestants.

“Honestly, I feel the same way the fans do,” said Team Blake’s Ray Boudreaux. “I don't know if it's a good thing or not. I guess it goes both ways. It could definitely be a good thing, but at the same time, it's a double-edged sword. The person who has the most votes in the bottom three could go home to the one that has the lowest ... I just hope it's not a popularity contest.”

Team Christina’s Matthew Schuler told us, “I think it's awesome. I think it empowers viewers. They have the power to save people right then and there. I'm really interested to see what happens with it.”

Regardless, the Instant Save is here to stay for a bit.

Said Daly, “I think we'll continue to do it definitely the next two Tuesdays.”

In other words, it will be in play at least until "The Voice" reveals its Top 6 artists.

"The Voice" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. and Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.
