You weren't expecting ruffles and Fred Leighton jewels were you?

The MTV Video Music Awards are all about bold, sexy fashion — and whatever it is Lady Gaga feels like wearing that day. On Sunday, our nation's most popular singers and musicians sported a variety of eye-catching (and confusing) styles, but a good chunk opted for chic, black leather outfits while others went the dramatic red gown route.

Miley Cyrus, with the help of her loose tongue, wore a two-piece outfit that may have finally given credence to Kanye's leather jogging rant; Chanel Iman was likely sweating in the California sun; and Ariana Grande was straight up wearing boots in August.

On Team Red, Demi Lavato channeled old school Hollywood glamour, while Rita Ora mastered the high slit style (sorry, Angelina.) Cher Lloyd, ever so polite, straddler both of the night's styles: red and leather.
