"The Sound of Music" is about to get some bite. NBC has announced that Stephen Moyer, who plays vampire Bill Compton on "True Blood," will be portraying Capt. Von Trapp in the network's live holiday production of the musical.

The role of the World War I hero was made famous by Christopher Plummer in the 1965 film, which won five Academy Awards and also starred Julie Andrews as Maria.

The iconic part of the young governess hired by single dad Von Trapp to take care of his seven kids will be played by former "American Idol" champ and country star Carrie Underwood.

This will not be the first time that Moyer is performing in a musical production. The actor, who graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, starred in the Hollywood Bowl's production of "Chicago" in July, playing attorney Billy Flynn.

The upcoming three-hour presentation of "The Sound of Music" is based on the original 1959 Broadway production, which won the Tony for best musical. It airs Dec. 5.
