"Teen Mom" star Amber Portwood was rushed to the hospital Tuesday after a reported suicide attempt, and her family blamed her ex-fiance, Gary Shirley, for the incident.

According to a friend of Shirley's, he may have had some part in the events.

The source told Life & Style that Portwood and her ex got into a fight over the phone around 9 a.m. "She said she was mad because he cheated on her, but he thinks that was just (an excuse) to pick a fight with him, because it happened two years ago," the source said to the magazine. "She said she was so upset, she was going to kill herself."

The friend told Life & Style that Shirley's response was to tell her "go ahead." According to the friend, Portwood then told her ex-fiance, "OK, when you come check on me, I'll be in the garage with a rope around my neck and you'll find my body there."

Later that morning, Shirley tweeted that he had "never cheated on Amber.. She may have thought I did, but haven't. I will always love and respect her even if we aren't together." The message has since been deleted.

According to the police report from Anderson, Ind., where Portwood lives, an operator responded to a caller at 11:34 a.m. who said the 21-year-old had threatened to commit suicide.

TMZ obtained a copy of the 911 call. On the tape, Shirley can be heard telling the operator, "I just spoke with my girlfriend ... she had said something to me, that she was having a hard time with her life, that call the police, 'They're going to find my body in the garage.' And I don't know what to do, so I'm calling you guys because I don't want her to kill herself. ... She's going to hang herself."

Star magazine reported via Radar Online that the 21-year-old was found on her couch by EMTs, and was going in and out of consciousness with a rope around her neck. Portwood was rushed to a local hospital, where she reportedly admitted to taking pills. Her family told Life & Style that she is now recovering.

Trouble has been no stranger to Portwood. She pled guilty last week to domestic battery after a season two episode of MTV's "Teen Mom" showed her repeatedly punching and kicking Shirley. In May, she lost custody of her daughter with Shirley after a judge ruled that the father would be a more suitable parent.
