Shailene Woodley is becoming a major force in Hollywood, but it’s not all glam and glitz for “The Fault in Our Stars” actress. In a chat on TODAY Monday, Woodley explained that she recently gave up her home to live as a serial couch surfer — and now travels with very few material possessions.

“In my everyday life, I use just this carry-on suitcase, and I think there’s, like, two pairs of jeans, a pair of leggings, a little box that my friend made me with all the trinkets and doodads that I collect here along the way,” she told TODAY anchor Savannah Guthrie. “And that’s it! Some underwear …”

No need for Woodley to pack toothpaste, of course — she makes her own out of clay.

Woodley’s minimalist approach apparently served her well when she tried out for “Fault.” The actress said director Josh Boone originally thought Woodley, now 22, was too old to play Hazel, the cancer-stricken teen at the heart of the story.

“I just remember going into the audition with really baggy clothes, no makeup on, tried to pull my hair back,” Woodley recalled.

Co-star Ansel Elgort admitted he didn’t think of himself as a shoo-in for the role of Augustus, either.

“It was really daunting — at first, especially, and the whole time,” said the actor, who also starred alongside Woodley in this year’s “Divergent.” “This character is so important. There are some people who love this guy and this story. … I really didn’t want to mess Augustus Waters up.”

John Green, author of the best-selling young adult novel from which the movie is adapted, was quick to reassure Elgort: “You didn’t mess him up, buddy. Good news.”

More good news: TODAY Book Club members will have the opportunity to participate in a Google+ Hangout Monday night live from the red carpet of the film adaptation's premiere with Green and the stars of the film. Click here to RSVP.

“The Fault in Our Stars” opens in theaters June 6.
