Good news, Carrie Bradshaw fans: Things are going to get a whole lot sexier on the CW.
In January, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the network was going ahead with a “Sex and the City” prequel called “The Carrie Diaries,” based on the book of the same name by "Sex" author Candace Bushnell.
As THR first reported, former "Sex and the City" co-producer Amy B. Harris is set to adapt the book and serve as the showrunner for the new effort. But now, more details about the show are available for fans eager to get back to Bradshaw's earlier life – for instance, the identity of her first love.
“The focus is so much on the Carrie Bradshaw’s character and who she was at 16, 17 years old,” Thom Sherman, the head of CW development, told Entertainment Weekly. “We weirdly compare it to 'Smallville' because it’s an origin story: How she started writing, how she came to love Manhattan.”
That's right. The city, not a man, first claimed her heart.
Faithful followers of the story can also look forward to more of the outrageous fashions the character is known for – this time with a 1980s twist, as that's when this part of the tale takes place.
“The Carrie Diaries” will focus on the high-school life of Carrie as she navigates the tumultuous world of being a teenager in New York. In the book, she struggles with fighting her school’s popular girl, Donna LaDonna, and falling for dreamboat Sebastian Kydd. The show will also focus on Carrie’s first internship and how she met her bestie Samantha Jones, and of course, sex.
But before anyone starts drawing comparisons to the CW's current teen angst and sex-filled hit “Gossip Girl,” Sherman assured that this show will be different.
“('The Carrie Diaries' is) more of an exploration of teen sexuality in a real way,” Sherman told EW. “ 'Gossip Girl' was young people in an adult world. This is young people living in a young world.”
If all goes according to plan, “The Carrie Diaries” will premiere fall 2012.
