Erin Martin was “relieved” to be booted off “The Voice" Tuesday night. The former model and member of Team Cee Lo was one of four hopefuls sent packing from the primetime singing competition. In an interview with TODAY.com, Martin explained why she believes that happened.
“The direction that Cee Lo (Green) was taking me with the music and the song choices ... it was all wrong,” she said. “It was like playing dress up but just in the wrong direction.”
Martin, who nearly died from a bout of ulcerative colitis as a teen, couldn’t recover from Monday night’s disastrous performance of The Bangles’ hit “Walk Like An Egyptian.”
“It looked great, but if you can’t hear my voice ... it just isn’t a song that is tailored for my voice," she told TODAY.com. "So what are you going to do? I would have rather sat behind a piano or been given a guitar and done something acoustically.”
The singer, 27, said members of her team “didn’t get a say” in what songs they performed on the show and that Green even decided on costumes “right down to the number of rhinestones.”
“I got to choose my song for my blind audition," she recalled. "I got to sort of choose this (final) Elton John song ("Your Song"). And those were songs where I really shined."
After Tuesday night's eliminations, 16 contestants remain in the competition. Members on Team Christina and Team Blake will perform Monday night at 8:00 PM on NBC.
