New 'Downton Abbey' trailer shows Mary must make a choice

Two months isn't technically that long of a wait, but it sure can feel like it when we're talking about beloved show "Downton Abbey." To give fans a little taste until the season four premiere, PBS has released a new trailer teasing the upcoming drama — and it looks like Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) is going to have a rough start.

As Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess tells her granddaughter in the teaser, Lady Mary "must choose either death ... or life."

When the show picks up, it'll have been six months after Mary's beloved husband, Matthew (Dan Stevens), was killed in a car crash on the day their first child, George, was born in last season's finale. But as the teaser indicates, Mary is still deep in mourning, so much so that she doesn't seem to be much of a mother to her son, calling him an "orphan."

But it's not all doom and gloom in season four. The teaser also promises some romance for the always unlucky-in-love middle child Edith (Laura Carmichael), as well as cousin Lady Rose (Lily James). Then there's the downstairs drama, with underbutler Thomas peeking around corners and likely back to his scheming ways, and a glimpse at the lives of still-newlyweds lady's maid Anna and valet Bates.

There were also a few sneak peeks of the new faces at Downton — including the show's first black character, jazz singer Jack Ross (Gary Carr) — but of course, no spoilers. (Want to get a head start and begin prepping for the new season? We're here to help.)

"Downton Abbey" returns on Jan. 5 on PBS.
