As the presidential candidates make last-ditch campaign stops ahead of the November election, fans of "The View" are happy to see the daytime chat fest in play. President Obama has made three appearances during his first term, and Republican hopeful Mitt Romney was set to appear again.
But as quickly as the booking was made it was taken away, and it was announced that Romney's wife Ann will appear instead.
Barbara Walters explained on Monday's show, "We were looking forward to it. Over the weekend, his people said that he had scheduling problems and would not be coming on with us. Nor at this point did he feel that he could reschedule." She added, "He can change his mind and we hope he does. It would be our pleasure to have him on the program."
Romney has appeared on the show twice: March 2, 2010, and Feb. 1, 2011, with Ann. However, he hasn't been back since officially becoming the Republican nominee. But it's not because the show -- which has tried repeatedly to book Romney -- was favoring Obama. Romney's opinion about the political makeup of the panel, which includes Walters, Sherri Shepherd, Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg and Elisabeth Hasselbeck, may be at play.
As Romney said in a leaked video from a fundraising dinner, "The View is -- is high risk because of -- of the five women on it, only one is conservative. Four -- are -- are sharp tongued and -- and not conservative. Whoopi Goldberg in particular. Although last time I was on the show she said to me, "You know what? I think I could vote for you." And I -- and I said, 'I must have done something really wrong.'"
Ann Romney's appearance on "The View" is scheduled for Oct. 18 on ABC.
