As creator, executive producer and host of BBC America's "Wild Things," Dominic Monaghan hopes to demystify the animals that tend to frighten people the most. But on the upcoming season of his show, the actor will introduce viewers to a few beasts that just might boost those fears.
The scares start off in the first episode of the show's second season, in which a bull elephant charges the "Wild Things" crew — and one unfortunate cameraman in particular. Monaghan, who played rocker Charlie on "Lost," shared the clip and the details that followed the incident during a Tuesday morning visit to TODAY.
"He's OK, but he fell down and we had to have a herpetologist and medic kind of ... jump in front of the elephant to essentially try to stop the elephant from killing him," Monaghan said of the cameraman's fate. "And that's not even the most exciting thing that happens in the season. Some really crazy stuff happens this season."
Dangers like that certainly keep the show exciting, but they're not part of the plan.
"We don't predict the crazy stuff that just kind of happens around us," Monaghan explained. "What I'm attempting to do is change people's ideas about animals most people are scared of, and if we get into situations where things crack off, we just have to go with it. We did not plan for the elephant."
They also didn't plan for the host to get hospitalized.
"I got opened up a few times this year," he admitted. "Had to go to the hospital. ... I got like 40 stitches in my arm from an animal (attack)."
As for which animal was responsible for that damage, viewers will have to tune in to find out.
Season two of "Wild Things With Dominic Monaghan" premieres on BBC America on March 25 at 10 p.m.
