'Little Couple's' good news turns bad when surrogate suffers a miscarriage

Nov. 2, 2011 at 12:21 PM ET

The season finale of TLC’s “The Little Couple” began with good news for Dr. Jennifer Arnold and her husband, Bill Klein. Their dream of starting a family seemed well underway when they learned their surrogate was pregnant. But sadly, the baby bliss didn’t last long.

After the initial excitement, the couple learned that the surrogate had suffered a miscarriage.

"I cried my eyes out," Arnold, a  neonatologist, recently told People magazine. "I deal with families who lose their babies and I will cry with them, but I thought I would be stronger. Nothing can completely prepare [you] for all that when it is about you."

But Arnold has no regrets when it comes to sharing that raw emotion with “Little Couple” viewers.

"When we lost the pregnancy, we wondered how we were going to handle it,” she said. “But by sharing our story, whether it be positive or negative, I think it can help others going through similar things."

Shortly after Tuesday night’s finale episode aired, fans flocked to Arnold and Klein’s Facebook page and posted hundreds of messages of support. The couple responded, explaining that despite the painful loss, they plan to continue their quest to have a child.

“Thank you so much for your ongoing support and prayers,” they wrote. “While the loss of the pregnancy was difficult for us, we remain upbeat and focused on growing our family. The story doesn’t end here… we promise :) -Bill & Jen "
