When they're not keeping the mean streets of New York safe from fictional predators, some of the past and present stars from "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" are busy doing good deeds elsewhere.

This week, the famous faces behind Sgt. Olivia Benson and her former partner Det. Elliot Stabler — aka Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni — took on the Ice Bucket Challenge in support of ALS research.

First up was Meloni, who on Monday posted a clip showing himself soaking wet, but it didn't actually show him getting soaked.

"If you take the ALS ice bucket challenge and no one records it does it really count?" he wrote.

Evidently not, because he was back on Instagram the next day to make it right.

Hargitay was among the people Meloni nominated to join in the charitable fun, and she was quick to respond with her own video.

Hargitay then extended invitations to more members of the "SVU" family, including Danny Pino (Det. Nick Amaro), Kelli Giddish (Det. Amanda Rollins) and Raul Esparza (ADA Rafael Barba), accompanied by the hashtag #sergeantsorders.

As fans await their clips, "SVU" lovers need not wait for an ice-bucket clip from Ice-T, who plays Det. Fin Tutuola on the drama.

Without mentioning the ALS Challenge directly, the rapper-actor — who was called out by BD Wong, aka Dr. Huang — made it clear that he wouldn't be following the star-studded crowd.

Instead, in recent days, Ice-T has used his social media presence to promote awareness about another issue — the events that have unfolded in Ferguson, Missouri, since police shot and killed unarmed teen Michael Brown.

On Thursday, he linked to a related clip from actor Orlando Jones, calling it "MY Bucket Challenge."

And then there are those who had shorter stints on the long-running drama. Harry Connick Jr., "American Idol" judge and former love interest for Benson (we still miss you, Executive ADA Haden), got a little creative with his challenge ...

... and former ADA Casey Novak (Diane Neal) had some help from her friends.

"Law & Order: SVU" returns with new episodes Sept. 24 at 9 p.m. on NBC.
