"The Killing" is rising from the dead. AMC and production company Fox Television Studios announced Tuesday that the crime drama is returning for a third season after all. The series had originally been canceled in July.

“‘The Killing’ from day one has been a truly original take on the crime drama," AMC president Charlie Collier said in a statement. "(Executive producer) Veena Sud and the rest of the talented creative team are hard at work shaping the lives of Linden and Holder, portrayed by the terrific Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman. We're so pleased to welcome back 'The Killing' for another season."

David Madden, president of Fox TV Studios, added, “We have always believed in 'The Killing' and remain extremely proud of it, which is why we all worked so hard to find a scenario that could give it new life.”

The third season will focus on a new case, which AMC said will be solved over the season's 12 episodes. At the end of the second season, Linden left her job as a Seattle homicide detective, and partner Holder moved on to his next mystery. The new episodes will pick up a year later as Holder's case leads him to uncover murders that appear tied to an old investigation Linden worked on.

Production on the new season begins at the end of February. No premiere date has been announced.
