A private airplane connected to pop star Justin Bieber was held and searched on Friday at New Jersey's Teterboro Airport, but no contraband was found, law enforcement sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NBC News.

Bieber was on board the plane, which arrived at Teterboro from Toronto. Officials told NBC News that they executed their authority to conduct a border search because the plane entered from Canada and there was suspicion that there was marijuana on board.

Law enforcement sources said that after the plane was cleared, Bieber was allowed to enter the U.S. and go on his way.

The singer's representatives have not returned NBC News' requests for comment.

Bieber, 19, has spent the last month dealing with police in several U.S. cities and in his home country of Canada. On Jan. 23, he was arrested in Miami Beach, Fla., on DUI, resisting arrest, and driving with an expired license charges following an alleged drag racing incident. A toxicology report showed he had marijuana and Xanax in his system when he was arrested.

On Wednesday, Bieber turned himself in to Toronto police and was charged with criminal assault in connection to a Dec. 30 incident in which he is accused of hitting a limousine driver on the head during a dispute. His attorney, Brian Greenspan, issued a statement that Bieber is "innocent" in that case.

On Jan. 14, Los Angeles sheriff's deputies descended on the singer's Calabasas mansion to serve a search warrant in connection with an allegation that the pop star egged a neighbor's house. A man staying at Bieber's house at the time was arrested on a felony narcotics violation during the search, but Bieber has not been charged. Investigators say they will present the case to the District Attorney's Office soon.
