When Justin Bieber appeared onstage Tuesday night during CBS' live telecast of "Fashion Rocks" and stripped down to his undies, he revealed two things: First, the man is buff. But it was also plain that not everybody present was happy to see him — since his appearance kicked off a round of boos from the crowd.

Things did not start out well for Bieber, who strode onto the stage in a blazer and pants alongside model Lara Stone as the audience gave out serious negative vibes. The pair were there ahead of the evening's Calvin Klein fashion show, and suddenly Bieber announced, "I actually don't feel comfortable unless I'm in my Calvins." He then began to shed clothing, stopping only when all he had on was a pair of the designer's black boxer briefs.

Once he was mostly naked, however, things turned around for the performer: His posing and flexing for the camera caused some fans to scream over the booers, at least.

On TODAY Wednesday, Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford did not approve of the move, and had some suggestions for Bieber.

"What he's got to do is get back to making music, not news," said Gifford.

Kotb noted that while he did have a hit in 2013 with "Heartbreaker," it's been a while since Bieber broke big with a tune that wasn't a collaboration.

"It's time to concentrate on what made him a star in the first place," added Gifford.

Meanwhile, Bieber tweeted about stripping (though not the booing) later on:

And he sent out a general thanks for his appearance that was retweeted by Calvin Klein.

Good+times+tonight.+Thanks+for+having+me+tonight+#FashionRocks.+#mycalvins+:)

So does this answer the question — which has been posed for months but not confirmed — of whether Bieber is actually an official rep for Calvin Klein? He's posted numerous photos on social media of himself wearing the designer's label, but there's been no announcement from the company, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment from TODAY.

But maybe there doesn't need to be. Tuesday night's shout-out was terrific free advertising for Calvin Klein, if not necessarily so great for Bieber himself.
